Clinical and Statistical Significance
While the clinical significance seeks to establish if medical practitioners can change a clinical
approach based on findings on a new therapy, Kahn, A. (1957). the statistical significance tries
to explore the probability with which results of an observed data during a research are important
in influencing a decision.
In program evaluation, the above two concepts are applied at the end of the results analysis so as
to determine whether or not a decision would be made based on the research program. For
instance, if the Clinical significance and the statistical significance are small, the program should
not be adopted. On the other hand, if both the Clinical significance is different from the statistical
significance are high, the results of the program are adopted, and the necessary changes effected,
Chow, S. (1996).
An example of a situation that a researcher can be torn between two types of significance in
results of a research is when dealing with research of cases yielding to the same treatment effects
while the sample sizes are different.
Other types of statistical evaluations that may help sort out the true significance of clinical
research findings are the bias which refers systematic statistical errors and confidence intervals
which gives a range of values within which a probability value of a specified parameter can be
found.
