Current HRM Topic Assignment HRM 335A you will be reviewing and writing about at least 2 current articles on a timely HR issue or HRM in practice (articles can be no more than 1 year old). You may use the sources on the syllabus to find the articles, or you can use a current newspaper and/or business magazine (Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, Business Week, Time, Fortune, Fast Company, etc.) or articles on their websites. You can be creative in searching the web for materials, just make sure the information you find is from reliable sources (i.e. not someone’s blog or website). You will send me an email no later than Friday, September 29th with your selected topic and the articles you will be using so I can approve them. Much better to find out at this point if they aren’t acceptable than when you turn in your paper. Getting this email in on time will count towards a part of your participation grade. While I would strongly prefer the articles both cover different aspects of the same topic so they can be compared and contrasted, I will reluctantly accept two non-related articles. The paper should contain a brief synopsis of the articles (about 1 page each), but most of it should relate the articles to what you are learning in class and commentary on what you read. While there is an expectation of good business writing, grading will be based mainly on the content of your paper – your understanding, analysis and interpretation of the articles you select. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has a lot of great information on their website: www.shrm.org . If you find anything there that you would be interested in, but can’t get to the information because you don’t have member access, let me know and I will get the article(s) for you. The same is true for WorldAtWork and some other HR related sites. Please note, I will be out of town on October 17 and 18 and will not have my computer with me, so plan accordingly. The paper should be no less than 4 pages (and I do mean 4 full pages – add another article if you need to), double spaced, with a 1-inch margin and using a normal 12 point font (Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, Univers, etc). Any “title” type information (your name, class, date, etc.) will not be counted as part of the 4 pages. In other words, don’t substitute lengthy titles, big margins or large fonts for actual paper content. It should contain a brief synopsis of the articles (about 2 pages for both) but mostly your commentary on what you read. Grading for this assignment will be as follows: Following guidelines for length, formatting, grammar, footnotes, bibliography, copies of articles, etc. Synopsis of the articles (i.e., what did the articles say – briefly) Reflections on your articles in relation to class/textbook materials – how is this the same, different or another aspect of what is in your textbook or what we’re learning in class? Analysis of the articles (i.e. what did you think about the information, how did the articles relate to each other and the business world? Does it make sense?) In other words, don’t just tell me what you read and learned, tell me what you thought about it. 25 points 50 points 50 points 25 points This paper is worth 15% (150 points) of your final grade.
