SETTING OF ‘‘BABYLON REVISITED’’
‘‘Babylon Revisited’’ according to the text took place during the era of a market crash which
was in the year 1929 although the date was never specified. In a repeated manner most characters
kept referring it to as ‘’the crash’’ this was an event which took place recently. The story was
written by Fitzgerald in 1930 December hence I assume the tale was set in the same year.
Being a product of its times, ‘‘Babylon Revisited’’ was mainly concerned with Jazz, drinking,
and partying because it was in the era of 1920s. The literature of Fitzgerald’s is viewed as one of
the hallmarks of the so-called Roaring Age also known as the Jazz Age, and it is due to a
lifestyle which was fast-paced hence epitomized his American generation by a greater
extravagance.
In 1929, the stock market crash brought America into a great depression. Charlie Wales, a
character in the 1920s was living in Paris an extravagant lifestyle. He looked back at his
debauchery with new eyes now that he had returned to Paris being sober-minded in the early
1930s. In the 1920s, the Americans also were looking back at their lavish lifestyle too. In
