Social imagination is defined by Wright Mills as the ability of an individual to understand
the connection between personal experiences and the community. Mills claims that sociological
imagination is the awareness that people have concerning the connection between personal
troubles and social issues. For example, the majority of the people struggle with personal issues
such as obesity and poverty as well as lack of income to pay for bills. It is imperative for the
people to understand that their issues are also public troubles. Despite the people suffering
secretly, each in the society has similar problems that they have to overcome in life. An
individual can decide to indulge in daily physical exercise to help reduce their weight believing
that this is a personal problem but in reality, it is a society issue. Thus, social imagination is the
awareness that people have of the relationship between the personal problems and their society.

Structural functionalist theory and Conflict theory utilize the macro-sociological
framework to study the society. The two theories utilize the macro perspective because they tend
to study and analyze a massive number of individuals. For instance, the micro theories study
people in a country or a state. The conflict theory is used in viewing and understanding the social
phenomena associated with disagreements. It can be utilized to understand the cause of issues
such as divorce, domestic violence, wealth, slavery, poverty and child abuse among others.
These are some of the problems experienced by individuals within the society. On the other
hand, the structural-functionalist theory is utilized to study and understand the systems believed
to be working in the society. It can be used to view and analyze systems that are not working and
devise solutions to the issues. For instance, some of the social systems in the society studied with
