The Role and Value of Women in A Relationship
Their eyes were watching God is the literary work of Zora Neale Hurston, an African
American writer which represents one of the best novels of the 20th century. The author brings
out some critical themes including love, the value of women in a relationship, love, hate, politics
and racism, at a time of the century when these themes were prevalent. The novel, though
slender but has packed a lot of themes which the author sets in such a way that all of them relate
to each other. This paper seeks to research on how the Zora Neale out brings the theme of the
value and role of women in a relationship or marriage. Before analyzing this theme, it is first
important to review the novel's synopsis. The main character of the novel, is an American
woman of African origin, Janie Crawford. She is a woman in her early forties who narrates her
life story to her best friend Phoebe Watson in a lengthy flashback. The author bases the novel
around the life of Janie Crawford in her entire three marriages to different men. It is through
these three periods of marriage that the author reveals the theme of value and role of women in a
relationship. Being a young lady, Janie expects more from life, especially the social aspect of it
and the relationship with men. Due to her physical appearance of a fair skin color and a long
hair, she expects a lot from the social life, but she later comes to realize that she has to face life
as an individual.

harassed. Nanny is an aged woman and the grandmother of Janie who was raped when she was
enslaved during her early ages. She was impregnated and gave birth to Leafy, a daughter of
mixed race. The author's work, in this case, shows that women during this time of the century
were mistreated and considered as sexual objects, or individuals who serve the mere purpose of
satisfying sexual desires. Although the themes of racism and sexual abuse are much stronger in
this part, the role or value...
