The Character of Ephesus Antipholus
The character of a person can be referred as the product of what values people have.
Character traits are developed from what people perceive to be of value and are different from
one individual to another. In ethics, some characters are regarded to be wrong while others are
considered good. The determination of whether a particular character is good or bad is based on
the impact it has on the recipient of an action. This paper will concentrate on analyzing the
character of Antipholus E which is one of the characters in Shakespeare's comedy of errors.
Antipholus of Ephesus is a twin brother to the Antipholus of Syracuse. The two are the
sons of Egeon and Emilia who were separated twenty years ago before they came to reconcile at
the end of the comedy. Antipholus E. is generally a man who is well known in the town of
Ephesus and in the comedy, he appears more of set-piece rather than a character. In the first and
second acts of the play he does not appear until the third act. Despite the fact that he was not
born in Ephesus, his life seems to be well established in the town and he has familiarity with

many people. The character traits of a person clearly define who they are more than words do. In
this context, the character of Antipholus E. can be defined in his actions throughout the play.
We can define Antipholus E. as person who is social as it is put in the comedy. This
character is because he has established his life living in the town of Ephesus with his wife
Adriana and his sister-in-law Luciana. Apart from his family, this Antipholus seems to know
everyone that he has to know in the city. The manner in which the S. Antipholus is treated by
people who confuse him for his brother is as a result of the reputation that E. Antipholus has
built. It is an indication therefore that Antipholus of Ephesus is social and the interaction he
makes with people has made almost everyone in the city to know him.
