Microsoft Project is difficult to use if you are not used to it. However, you require at least
one week to learn how to use MS Project. It is a bit complicated when compared to other tools
such as MS Word and MS Excel. Some basic features of the MS Project such as developing the
project schedule and assigning tasks are easy to use. A large number of Project Managers use
Microsoft Project, and this implies that if you have any kind of question, you will get an answer
on the web that has been posted by one of the project managers.
At first, you need to learn about the MS Project setup and select the task type. The tool
will automatically allocate a type to summary task for every task. For instance, I prefer fixed
work or effort for regular tasks. After you have made the selection, you are supposed to fill the
fixed work or effort column with your estimates. Do not forget that the formula duration = units
x work whereby units refers to the total number of resources. In this case, you can change the
number of resources and it will prompt the MS Project to change the duration without interfering
with the fixed work or effort. In general, the most important thing about Microsoft Project is
learning how to enter the data and dependencies before starting to create project schedules.
There are several challenges I foresee in using MS Project in this course. Microsoft
Project schedule may not be able to handle out-of-date sequence progress efficiently. For
instance, the construction schedulers have been disappointed on several occasions with the MS
Project results after incorporating real-world status to a schedule. Some of the data entered are
subjected to internal changes which negatively affects the quality control. The issue of an out-ofdate sequence is caused by the inability of the Microsoft Project to use a data date or status date

when recalculating the schedule. As an alternative, it uses start date and actual dates when
executing calculations (Advisicon et al., 2012).
Secondly, Microsoft Project has strict rules when it comes to modifying activity data on
the basis of updating various fields. Some examples of the activity data that n...
