Here is a little job description to work with:

I currently work for the Port of San Francisco, as a Manager of Pile Driving and Commercial Diving. My job consists of managing three crews to building, repairing, and maintaining piers, wharfs, and docks around the San Francisco bay. Whatever can’t be done outside of the water we do under the water. I have been a supervisor for thirteen years and manager for two years, hopefully moving up to Superintendent and eventually Project Manager.

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP IN THE ORGANIZATION

2

The attainment of the high level of returns is anchored on the kind of leadership in a firm.
A successful leader aids the organization towards achieving its mission, vision, and objectives.
Distinct theories have been utilized to explain the concept of leadership. For instance, the trait
theory of leadership claims that individuals have certain qualities that contribute to them being
effective and efficient leaders in an organization. This paper describes the trait theory and how it
an organization can make use of it. The paper will also discuss other concepts in leadership such
as the effect of power and influence leaders have on their followers, the role of transformational
and transactional leadership, traits of an effective team leader, the support that leadership offers
to the vision, mission, and strategy of an organization. The last part of the paper will cover the
changes I would make in the organization as a leader.
The Port of San Francisco is an organization like any other that can apply leadership
theories to explain the different traits among its leaders. These theories allow one to understand
the primary factors that influence the behaviors of leaders. The trait leadership theory is one of
the numerous theories that increase the understanding of how individuals become competent
leaders. This theory argues that leaders possess certain characteristics that make them unique
over other people (Derue, Nahrgang, Wellman, and Humphrey, 2011).
The trait theory focuses on extending the knowledge regarding the primary characteristics
that are common among many leaders. Despite people believing that some individuals are born
to become leaders. The trait theory claims that for a person to be a great and successful leader, he
must have been born with certain qualities. Also, the theory defines individuals as having certain
skills, features, and qualities that make them competent in the leadership role.

In the organization, individuals with qualities such as intelligence, creativity and have a
sense of responsibility are seen as successful leaders. The trait theory believes that successful
leaders possess skills such as intelligence, creativity, persuasive, socially skilled, and fluent in
communication, tactful and conceptually skilled (Dinh, Lord, Gardner, Meuser, Liden and Hu,
2014). On the other hand, the theory claims that competent leaders have traits such as selfconfidence, assertive, cooperative, persistent, decisive and dependable. Further, the leader can
tolerate stress as well as adapt to new changes and situations.
In the organization, the trait theory applies in the sense that one explains how managers
and team leaders at San Francisco Bay guide their employees towards accomplishing the aims
and purposes of the firm. For instance, the organization can serve its clients effectively with the
assistance obtained from the competent skills and traits of its leaders. As a manager at the Bay, I
believe that I have the requisite abilities that make me efficient in my duty of managing the three
crews responsible for repairing, building and maintaining wharfs, piers, and docks around the
bay.
Also, working as a supervisor at the bay for the past thirteen years required for me to
have certain leadership skills. For instance, I am intelligent, persistent, creative and persuasive. I
am also achievement-oriented and an ambitious individual with a goal to move up in the
organization from a manager to a superintendent and later on to a project manager. Thus, my
traits have allowed me to be a successful leader in the organization. In the same way, other
leaders have competent skills and traits lead them on efficiency and proficient in their place of
work. Thus, as the trait theory suggests that leaders are born while others are made with certain
