VISUAL ART ANALYSIS DUE OCTOBER 10th The purpose of a visual analysis is to recognize and understand the visual choices the artist made in creating the artwork. By observing and writing about separate parts of the art object, you will come to a better understanding of the art object as a whole. A visual analysis addresses an artwork’s formal elements—visual attributes such as color, line, texture, and size. A visual analysis may also include historical context or interpretations of meaning. For this assignment you are free to choose a work you wish to write about. Any artwork (2-D and 3-D) that I can locate on the internet to also view is an option. Feel free to select a piece that you have seen included within your Unit 1 content. • Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh is excluded as a choice, as this is the selected work for your provided example. If you are stuck on your selection, I would recommend The Two Fridas by Frida Kahlo. Introduction: Describe the content as if you are writing to someone who has never seen the artwork through a description of what is going on in how the composition is arranged. What is happening here? Body: 3 paragraphs that further describe the image- Include relevant art elements and principles of design: Line, Shape, Perspective, Mass, Space, Motion, Color, Light, Texture, Unity, Variety, Balance, etc. Conclusion: For the final paragraph write about your personal feelings towards the work: Do you enjoy it? Does it provoke emotion? Is it pleasing to look at? Do you find meaning in the piece? Why and How? Finished Product should be 2 pages double spaced with 12pt font UNDERSTANDING VISUAL ART 160 EXAMPLE OF STUDENT WORK: Jane Doe December 3, 2015 Art 160 Visual Analysis of Starry Night My personal favorite painting is Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night. In case one has not seen this famous piece of work, it depicts a painting of a beautiful night sky that showcases the stars in a brilliant way. The painting was created in 1889 and it is an oil on canvas. The painting is done in cool colors and you get a feeling of peace from looking at it. The view is from an elevated point and it shows a bright and “starry” night that’s light glow illuminates the gentle rolling hills and the small and quiet houses that are in the valley. In the left region of the picture, there is a dark tall object that resembles a dried out tree and it reaches toward the sky. The moon emits a soft glow in the top right hand side of the work. Van Gogh brilliantly harnesses his skills by incorporating multiple elements of art into his masterpiece that no one can seem to forget. One element of the work that is especially prominent when examining this piece is the use of painterly stokes that make up the piece. His impasto stokes adds dimensions to the painting that has an almost hypnotic effect. It is almost as if the viewer can see every stroke that Van Gogh made with his brush and this is not only beautiful, but it can create a connection with the audience making them feel as if they are actually there when it was created The stokes draw the viewer’s eyes across the image which creating a sense UNDERSTANDING VISUAL ART 160 of movement. The flow of the movement is very gentle and it is as if you can almost feel the breeze of the cool night. Secondly, Van Gogh’s piece of work is quite remarkable due to his use of color. He uses cool colors to create a sense of serenity. He also contrasts the hues of blue with splashes of warm and vibrant yellow that add bursts of emphasis to the work in his successful attempt to depict the stars in the sky. In addition to this, he plays on the use of the complementary color of blue and orange to entice the viewers farther since the use of complementary colors is quite satisfying to most audiences. This also helps direct the viewer’s eyes in the way we can only imagine Van Gogh had intended. Lastly, the use of Van Gogh’s lines makes the image more than memorable. He uses very organic lines and this is very visually pleasing. Organic lines are lines that have curves and are not geometric, which are typically harsher and technical which is not what you want when creating a scene of a still night. The use of his lines again lead to the movement of the eye across the canvass in a swirling and flowing rhythm that the eye can easily pick up on. The organic line lends to a very real and intimate feel from the painting. These are only a few of the reasons why I enjoy Starry Night. There are few paintings that we encounter that stick with us for years and I have never witnessed an artist execute these elements in a better way. Not only is his skill remarkable, but the emotions that he invokes by the brush of paint across a canvas is remarkable. UNDERSTANDING VISUAL ART 160

Visual Analysis of Art
Over the years art has been used to communicate many messages which have different
views and opinions depending on those who are viewing or studying them. Although art and
picture are not that embraced in the society they usually carry essential information. Many artists
have been able to come with many masterpieces that have been found to be unique, exciting and
communicative. One of the art that I found to be very interesting, adorable and stunning was
created by Pablo Picasso in March 1932 who created an art known as Girl before A Mirror which
was an oil portrait of a girl...
