Description

Hello, you helped me to write my first paper for this class and I have attached it below in the attachments. However, the paper that I am needing help with now is my final paper for this class.

Write an analysis of a key character in a literary work. Focus on two or three key actions of that character. Discuss the character’s motivations and decisions in terms you can support with clear evidence from a critical reading of the text. Consider whether this character’s actions fit together or contradict each other. You may also want to consider whether or not any other characters in the story are aware of this conflict, and if so, how they influence the character you are writing about.

“Interpreter of Maladies” (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (Jhumpa Lahiri, 1999)

Guiding Questions:
  1. How does a new outsider community member like Mrs. Das influence Mr. Kapasi, who seems to have become bored with his life and his role in the community?
  2. How does Mr. Kapasi’s desire for Mrs. Das make him unable to understand Mrs. Das’ desires, leading to his failure to fulfill his role as the Interpreter of Maladies?
  3. How do the Das family’s actions surrounding their children show that their desires or interests do not accord with their obligations?

Why Write a Literary Analysis?

Literature teaches us about the value of conflict. We experience conflict in our personal relationships and in our interactions with society. A literary analysis helps us recognize the conflict at work in literature; this gives us greater insight into the personal conflicts that we face. In addition, learning how to closely read, analyze, and critique a text is beneficial beyond a literature course in that it improves our writing, reading, and critiquing abilities overall.

How to Write a Literary Analysis

It is important to understand that some conflicts in literature might not always be obvious. Considering how an author addresses conflict via literary techniques can reveal other more complex conflicts or different kinds of conflicts that interact in multiple ways. Analyzing those more complicated elements can help you discover what literature represents about the human experience and condition. With this in mind, consider that your thesis might be a claim about how conflict is represented in a work, whether through character, setting, or tone. This is not a personal reflection on conflict in general or a conflict you face but an analysis of how literary elements are used to express a conflict in a given literary work—in this case, a short story.

The literary analysis should be organized around your rough draft and thesis statement. Your thesis is the controlling idea of the entire essay. In the Week One assignment you submitted a proposal in which you chose a topic based on the List of Writing PromptsView in a new window. You also identified a short story to analyze from the List of Literary WorksView in a new window. In Week Two you compiled an annotated bibliography in which you identified your primary and secondary sources. In Week Three, you created a rough draft and revised your working thesis. You also incorporated research into this draft.

Assignment Instructions

In this assignment, you will refine that thesis and essay even further and develop your argument. You are required to incorporate your instructor’s feedback in your Final Paper and to take peer feedback into consideration.

In your paper,

  • Create a detailed introduction that contains a thesis that offers a debatable claim based on one of the prompts on the list.
  • Apply critical thought by analyzing the primary source you selected from the approved List of Literary Works. Avoid summary and personal reflection.
  • Develop body paragraphs that contain clear topic sentences and examples that support the argument.
  • Write a conclusion that reaffirms the thesis statement and includes a summary of the key ideas in essay.
  • Apply your knowledge of literary elements and other concepts in your response to the prompt. Reference the list of literary techniquesView in a new window found in Week Two of the course and discussion forums.
  • Incorporate research from the primary and secondary sources.

Running head: INTERPRETER OF MALADIES Destinee Anderson ENG 125 Introduction to Literature Instructor: Allison Robertson 11 September 2017 1 INTERPRETER OF MALADIES 2 I have chosen to write about prompt #1: "Interpreter of Maladies: in literature, characters convey different features. The way characters’ act may be different from the way one expected to work by the society, an aspect that brings confusion on how one is supposed to act around others and their families. I find it interesting to analyze this prompt as it captures the aspect of family and how the family is expected to conduct itself. This is interesting as from this prompt I will be able to learn a lot when it comes to an ideal family and what is expected of a family to regard as a typical family that conforms to the norms of the society as well as taking into consideration the needs of the family without neglect. The desire to learn all these aspects makes this prompt an interesting. I chose to write about Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies because the story conforms well to the prompt. From the story, the Das family captured as well as Mr. Kapasi. What makes this text appealing to me is how the concept of family is brought out. The story is an explicit representation of the contemporary society where the family has lost its stand and firmness as used to be in the early days. For example, “from the story, the Das family is not an ideal family as we expect a family with children to be” (Williams, 2004, p. 456). Both Mr. Das and Mrs. Das act as though they are children as Mr. Kapasi notes. They seem to be irresponsible despite the fact that they have children, and arguing about who should take care of some of the responsibilities of their children shows they are not responsible and luck parenting skills. A family is healthy when the parents are aware of their obligations and roles as parents, and love is well manifested between the parents as well as towards their children. This, however, INTERPRETER OF MALADIES 3 is lacking in the Das family as well as Mr. Kapasi’s family. (1) Das family argue when it comes to taking roles concerning their children. (2) There is no love lost between Mr. Das and Mrs. Das as noted in the story when Mrs. Das tells Mr. Kapasi that she no longer loves her husband. (3) His parents had arranged Mr. Kapasi's marriage, and this makes it hard for them to match and have a standard stand when it comes to their roles in the family. One of the concerns I have about this project is how I will organize my ideas so that I explain every detail within the given word count. This is very important as the story has many aspects which range from infidelity in the family and how a family is supposed to be in society to ensure harmony. There is also a concern about research when it comes to this area of study. I have many areas to search and am I want to choose the best areas to get content that will help me in coming up with a well-researched project. From the beginning of the story, the Das family appear to be having different interest especially when it comes to raising up their children. A good example of manifested is when the two are arguing about taking their daughter, Tina, to the bathroom. From this, one notes explicitly that the two parents act in a way that does not conform to their obligations as parents. They do not care about their children to the extent of arguing about their children. Their actions, as noted in the story presents an unfortunate family in which the parents have differing interests when it comes to family. “Further, when Mrs. Das buys snacks, she sits in the car and eats all alone without even giving to her children” (Koshy, 2013, p. 375). This represents an act of irresponsibility from a parent to children. It is not only that but also the two quarrel about the state of the car that they use for their tour. Mrs. Das does not like the car and prefers one with an air-conditioner. Further, when monkeys surround Bobby, his father instead of helping him takes a picture before Mr. Kapasi comes to Bobby's rescue. This action shows how Mr. Das as a parent INTERPRETER OF MALADIES 4 fails to do his duty of protecting his children until an outsider saves his son. He does not care about her kids. Mr. and Mrs. Das have lived together for long and had children. From the story, the two do not love each other, and this is seen when Mrs. Das tells Mr. Kapasi that she does not love her husband. She confesses to Mr. Kapasi of how she had cheated on her husband and got Bobby. Perhaps it is from that affair that her love for her husband died. The way she describes Mr. Kapasi’s job as romantic shows that she cares less about her husband. “The description, however, intensifies how Mr. Kapasi feels towards her and this makes Mr.Kapasi’s ability to interpret maladies less active” (Dhingra, 2012, p. 146). His crush on Mrs. Das affects his role as an interpreter. Because Mr. Kapasi wanted to have her, he fails to understand her desire which is to be healed from her guilty feeling. Instead, Mr. Kapasi expected her desire to be the same as his, and this made it difficult to interpret her malady. From this, Mr. Kapasi is also not honest with his wife, as he desires wife of another man. In fact, he expected Mrs. Das to tell him of how bad her husband was after she had taken his address. With his marriage organized by his parents, Mr. Kapasi seems to have had challenges with his wife who he asserts that they have nothing in common. Mr. Kapasi as noted from the story feels bored with his role and the community. His job as an interpreter, he argues, was only as a way of helping him to pay medical bills for his son who had contracted typhoid and died at the age of seven (Dasgupta & Lal, 2007). He is bored with life, but Mrs. Das’s description of the job as romantic gives him a glimmer of hope. He finally gets someone whose perception of his job is different, and this gives him a new way to look at his employment of an interpreter. Besides, Mr. Kapasi realizes that it is not only his marriage that has challenges when he shares with Mr. Das and this further makes him feel relieved. INTERPRETER OF MALADIES 5 Ultimately, the story is well outlined and captures the actions of the Das family as well as those of Mr. Kapasi. From the discussion above, one sees how parents are supposed to be responsible for their family as well as the effects of infidelity on relationships INTERPRETER OF MALADIES 6 References Brada-Williams, N. Character Analysis

The ‘Interpreter of Maladies’ is an epic story by Lahiri Jhumpa that aims at passing
various issues which the author feels affects the society. The 1999 publication has been
considered as an excellent work of art, and has gone ahead to win different awards including the
Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2000 among many other awards. The story mainly touches on the
lives of the native Indians, and how they can apply them in their western homes. The story is
very critical, and the aspect of character development plays a huge role in portraying the
concepts, the thinking, and the state of ethnicity among the Indian individuals. The character
exhibited by the characters provides the story with a sense of understanding on the way of life,
and what is expected from an individual of the Indian consent (Daiya, 2011). The story by Lahiri
evidently showcases how a character can be used to drive the message intended by the author.
The mode of interaction with other persons, and the way the individual reacts to situations work
to exhibit the character which the author seeks to showcase. Hence, this paper aims to carry out
an analysis of the character of Mrs. Das, and how she plays a role in passing the intended
message by the author.
