Introduction
Crime has existed in the society from time immemorial. Different cultures have dealt
with it differently. While some have adopted very cruel, inhumane, and creative ways of
punishment, others have chosen a relatively fair system of justice. Nevertheless, each system has
had and served its purpose in fulfilling a given role in the society they are established. The
classical criminology as envisioned by Bentham and Beccaria in the 1700’s and 1800’s has been
the foundation upon which the modern criminal system is based on. While very many changes
have been made to it, its core principles have remained to date and continue to influence how law
and crime relate to each other. Importantly, religion has contributed to crime and punishment
differently. Some religions have adopted a ruthless approach to discipline while others have
taken a laid-back approach that has seemed mundane. Nevertheless, each system has been
effective in creating a system that has continued to drive those societies forward. Together with
the modern criminology, religion has helped in creating a holistic if not a purposed criminal
system that is realistic to those seek redemption from its functions. There is still a long way to go
before such a system fulfills its intended purpose of providing free and fair trial and judgment.
