Description

Three type written pages minimum, double space (from hand written notes). If possible, add picture of artwork on a fourth page.

Write a three page analysis on a short section of a single art work of your choice. Look for what is unusual and distinctive about the way the art work is made, its formal qualities. What are the techniques used to structure the work. How does the composition, the aproach to applying materials, the colors, textures, context, and the relationship between the different elements of the art work challenges us and surprises us? How these formal gestures contribute to or interact with our understanding of the work?

Your essay should discuss how the work exploits elements of form by using detailed, concrete references to specific details. Describe the strategies being used but also, again just as important, what do these strategies bring to your experience of the art work. Remember that it is an analysis, not a review! It is the quality of your explanations that counts. Points will be deducted for poor grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Please proof read your papers carefully!

ATIAS HISTORIQUE TO ME IV. ΤΤΕΝΤΑ, ATIAS HISTORIQUE TO ME IV. ΤΤΕΝΤΑ, P. Sluyter (Dutch, 18th c.) After Henri Abraham Chatelain (French, 1684 - 1743) Frontispiece to the Atlas Historique, Tome IV, 1714 Engraving on paper Gift of Nancy J. Powell 1995.23 Henri Abraham Chatelain, a Huguenot pastor originally from France, produced the Atlas Historique in Amsterdam from 1705 to 1720, with additional editions printed into the late 1730s. The atlas was unprecedented for its time with its combination of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. This frontispiece tells an intriguing story. Look at the plinth in the middle of the piece. On it is the title of the book, translated as Historical Atlas Volume IV. On the pedestal, in the center of the image, is a winged figure representing Clio, the muse of history, which emphasizes the importance of the past as depicted in this historical atlas. Around Clio are women with crowns, representing various northern European kingdoms, indicating that this volume of the Atlas Historique describes the historical geography of these powerful states. This is also underscored by the figure in the background holding a map of northern Europe. The crowned figure on the left of the image presenting an offering to Clio represents Sweden, indicated by the shield containing an image of the powerful Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus. The figure in the bottom left is Denmark, holding the historical coat of arms for Denmark and Norway, which were united into one state for a time in the early modern period. The figure on the right points down to the coat of arms of the Russian Empire. Under Russia's feet is a man with a turban depicting barbarism. His placement represents the northern European states overcoming barbarity with civilization. The character in the top right holding the two trumpets is a representation of Fame. At the bottom, with the bears and seal showing the stormy weather prevalent to northern Europe, is the word "Septentrio." Septentrio refers to the constellation Ursa Minor, which contains Polaris, the North Star. Travelers and geographers used this star to orient themselves and it reinforces the impression of power in the north of Europe.
