Attached is a form you can use to keep a media diary. Between now and next module pick one 24 hour period
when you can track you media use. Next module you will compare your experiences to typical adolescent
experiences.
24 Hour Media Diary
In a typical day, most children and adolescents engage with multiple forms of media
including television, music, websites, movies, books and magazines, video games,
instant messaging, and more. Between now and next Module, pick one 24-period in
which you keep a record of all of your media use. You can carry this sheet with you and
fill it out, or you can carry a small notebook and transfer it to the sheet later, but don’t
wait until the end of the day, or you’ll likely forget some items.
Please pick a typical day. If you know you will be camping in Yellowstone or hiding under a rock for a
day, pick a different day!
Please record general details of what media you used. If you listen to your MP3 player
for an hour, you don’t need to list all of the songs you heard. Similarly, if you surf the
web, you don’t need to list each website you visited. Do note names of magazines,
television programs, and movies watched, and if you spend a decent amount of time at a
certain website or listening to certain radio station or album, you can note that as well.
Please note the context in which your media use took place. Did you watch a movie at
home, in the theater, or at a friend’s house? What else were you doing while watching?
Talking with friends? Studying? Specifically note if you were using multiple forms of media
at once. Also, note any messages that struck you or any specific content that you think might
be relevant to kid’s development.

In a 6-8 page paper, you will introduce your topic, make recommendations, and
support those recommendations with your scholarly research and information
from the textbook and class activities. This paper should not simply repeat the
information you already presented in your video. Instead, use the paper as a
starting point to demonstrate your understanding of concepts, terms, and
research findings from class. Cite your sources using APA style. Also, make sure to
specifically consider diversity and adolescent development. How might the
issues you are presenting be shaped by culture, socioeconomic status, sexual
orientation, etc. The emphasis of this paper should be on accurately and
creatively applying course material. Make sure you don’t spend too much time
providing details about possible solutions or strategies, or you won’t have
enough room to focus on course material. The paper is worth 40 points. Grading
will evaluate clear communication, critical thinking and application of
psychology content, and how you address diversity. Please look at the full rubric
before beginning your paper so you know what I’ll be looking for.
A. Teachers
In module 6 we learned about parents who were authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. Now, in
chapter 10, the textbook explains how teachers can also be authoritative, authoritarian, and
permissive (pages 347-348). Think back to one of your high school teachers and describe his/her
approach. Was this style authoritative, authoritarian, permissive? Also describe your response to this
teaching style. Does it match what's described in the text?
Look over your timeline, thinking specifically about Person-Environment Fit (page 348-349). Look at some of
your timeline posts from early, middle, and late adolescence. Then go here and answer some questions: When
did your environment best fit your personal, developmental needs? When was there a mismatch?
C. Person-Environment Fit
Look over your timeline, thinking specifically about Person-Environment Fit (pg 340).
Look at some of your timeline posts from early, middle, and late adolescence. When did
your environment best fit your personal, developmental needs? When was there a
mismatch? *
B. Diversity in schools
The textbook describes differences in schooling experiences based on SES and ethnicity
(pages 354-357) and the processes for encouraging positive relationships among diverse
student bodies. I’d like you to think about these factors and how they might relate to your
own educational experiences. What did you experience that corresponds to the information
presented in the text? Any parallels? Any differences?
B. Adolescent Media Use
Pages 419-427 describe adolescents' experiences with electronic media and some of the changes that have taken place
recently. Look over your media diary from last module and also reflect on some of your media experiences from earlier
during your adolescence. Did your experiences match what's described in the text? Specifically, respond to two questions:
1) Did you engage in any media mulitasking? 2) Consider the "effects" of media described on pages 412-413, and
speculate about the effects the content you viewed might have on an adolescent. Recognize that most people
claim that media has no effects on them, personally. This is called the third-person effect. We all like
to think that we are immune to media effects even though it might affect other people. Try to put that
tendency aside and consider the possible effects.
C. Movie: Africans in America
Watch the movie http://fod.infobase.com/p_ViewVideo.aspx?xtid=33032 Africans in America,
and consider specifically how the experiences of these adolescents and their families
reflect the material from chapters 12 and 13. Specifically, be sure to review the material
on immigration (pages 413-415), ethnic minority adolescents (pages 415-416),
prejudice, discrimination, and bias (pages 418-419), acculturative stress (pages 438440), and coping (pages 440-442). This information will help you answer the following
questions on this form.
If the direct link isn't working for you, go to Gallaudet's library page, then FilmsOnDemand, then
search "Africans in America" and the movie should come up
D. Resources at Gallaudet
Pick one of the problems described in Chapter 13 (e.g. substance use, delinquency, depression, suicide, and
eating disorders). Review the section of the text describing the problem, then surf the web and see what
resources a Gallaudet student might use if s/he or someone close was struggling with this problem. In the
discussion board, describe some of the struggles facing adolescents related to that problem, and share links to
resources available here at Gallaudet and in the broader community. (Eat
(Depression… I have seen that some students are unhappy with socializing. In general people ignore
them because that’s where they came from-hearing world. Its wrong to ignore. We should make sure
that everyone feel warmly welcomed and comfortable. The deaf community in Gallaudet is too small.

A. School Transitions- Timeline Assignment
The text describes the transitions between elementary, middle, and high school (page 342-342), the
transition to college (page 346) and the transition to work (page 346). Pick two of these events and create
one event for each transition.
Label the events based on the transition, for example “7.1- Transition to High School” or “7.2- Transition to
College.” Set the date based on when the transitions took place.
In your paragraphs, describe your transition. Did your experience match what’s described in the text?
Terms and concepts to apply:
Top dog, relationships, indepdence and autonomy, stress, diversity, exploration, training
A. Intrinsic & Extrinsic- Timeline Assignment
The text describes intrinsic and extrinsic motivation (371-372). Think about a time when you experienced intrinsic
motivation in school. Label the “7.3- Intrinsic Motivation” Set the date based on when the experience took place. In
your paragraphs, describe your experience. Where did the motivation come from? What did it look like? How did
your motivation affect your achievement? Did your experience match what’s described in the text?
Terms and concepts to apply:
Self-determination, choice, flow, cognitive engagement, self-responsibility.
A. Rites of Passage- Timeline Assignment
Pages 406-407 of your text describes rites of passage as they function in the US and around the world. Think about your own
adolescence and pick one rite of passage that you experienced. Label the event “8.1- rite of passage.” Set the date based on when
the rite of passage took place.
In your paragraphs, describe your experience. Why would you consider this as a rite of passage? Did your
experience match the material in the text?
Terms and concepts to apply:
Responsibilities, ceremony/ritual, coming-of-age, tradition, adulthood
In a 6-8 page paper, you will introduce your topic(its about Deaf children's brain
development. Please research on positive information about Deaf, not loss hearing) make
recommendations, and support those recommendations with your scholarly
research and information from the textbook and class activities. This
paper should not simply repeat the information you already presented in your
video. Instead, use the paper as a starting point to demonstrate your

sources using APA style. Also, make sure to specifically consider diversity and
adolescent development. How might the issues you are presenting be shaped
by culture, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, etc. The emphasis of this
