VISUAL FLIGHT RULE

2
Introduction

Visual flight rules refer to a set of given rules and regulations that a pilot must follow
when flying an aircraft under given weather conditions that allow the pilot to see the direction
that the aircraft is headed. The pilot must be able to operate the aircraft in conditions that are
below the VFR minimum known as the Visual meteorological conditions. The pilot must,
therefore, be able to fly the aircraft with a visual reference point to the ground and be able to
avoid obstacles such as other aircrafts. If the weather conditions are however below the VMC,
the pilots are advised to use the Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Most of the aviation accidents,
however, occur in VFR conditions and causes are discussed in this essay.
There are a number of causes of aircraft accidents under VFR conditions. Some of these
include inadequate preparation or planning, failure to maintain or obtain the required flying
speed, problems in maintaining the directional control, failure to avoid obstructions, poor level
off, poor management of fuel, poor in-flight decision making, poor management of fuel, poor
selection of the terrain, poor operation of the flight controls and poor judgment of the speed and
distance (Haberkorn et al., 2013).
One of the major causes of aircraft accidents is lack of proper flight preparation and
planning. Each aircraft is different regardless of whether it looks like another flight. It is
therefore very important for the pilot to conduct proper preparation of the flight before taking
off. This involves completing the NAVLOGs, creating a fuel plan, filing the flight plan and most
importantly checking and monitoring the weather (Dismukes, 2017). Most pilots assume this and
therefore lack to conduct a proper flight plan. This leads to complications during the flight where
the pilot had not planned for obstacles that he or she encounters mid-air. It is therefore important
