There are different ways through which leaders can motivate the employees. Some of the
theories which explain how leaders can motivate employees to include the Carrot and Stick
theory, Maslow and Theory of Human Needs and Motivation-Hygiene Theory. Motivation is the
driving force behind everyone’s actions. Organizational leaders need to know what motivates
employees to work productively and diligently.
The carrot and stick theory
The carrot and stick theory is a traditional motivation theory which was developed by
Jeremy Bentham. The method was established in 1800 during the industrial revolution and
divides motivation into two primary components. Fear and incentives. The theory states that
some employees are motivated to work in a bid to earn more compensation as they yearn to
attain power and high status. On the other hand, the theory states that some employees tend to
work more out of fear of losing job or fear of not being able to perform on a job. The method can
be applied in motivating employees within the organization through the use of “carrots” which
refer to rewards such as monitory reward and non-monetary rewards. These rewards tend to
motivate employees towards improving their productivity. Organizational leaders can also use
“sticks” to motivate employees towards production. The application includes use cut of
commissions or other benefits if employees or departments do not attain specific targets.
However, this practice is risky as it might lead employees into quitting the organization (Joseph,
2017)

One of the significant weakness of the carrot and stick theory is that it is difficult to
determine what rewards motivate every individual. Different people are motivated differently at
different times, hence being difficult for leaders to motivate the employees. Another weakness of
the theory is that the incentives might be expensive for the organization regarding cost. Also, the
