PERCENT WATER IN HYDRATED SALT
Introduction
Most chemical compounds especially salts will contain some water if they have been
exposed to atmospheric conditions for a certain length of time (Massey et al 2017). The bond
between this water varies with different chemical solids. Mostly water in a hydrate is not usually
held on the surface of the crystal but within its structure. Efflorescent compounds lose their water
spontaneously to the atmosphere, unlike other compounds that require heating. These chemical
compounds are grouped into efflorescent, hygroscopic or deliquescent depending on their
behavior in the atmosphere.
Objectives
The objectives of this laboratory practical is to;
1. Determine the water of hydration in sample salt compound
2. Determine the percent hydration water in hydrated salt sample
Equipment

Bunsen burner

Crucible and lid

Hydrated salt

Weighing balance

150 mm test tube

Clay triangle

Pair of tongs

PERCENT WATER IN HYDRATED SALT
Procedure
1. Check the provided crucible for any cracks and clean it thoroughly
2. Support the crucible with clay triangle and heat it with intense temperature for 5 minutes.
3. Note and record the mass of the cool crucible and lid
4. Add 3 g of hydrated salt to the crucible
5. Read and record he mass of crucible lid and hydrated salt
6. Adjust the lid and open the crucible to allow the evolved water molecules escape
7. Heat the contents slightly for ten minutes, do not heat to red hot to decompose the salt
8. Determine the combined mass of the contents after cooling to room temperature
9. Repeat the procedure twice with a new sample and record the weights as provided
10. Clean the apparatus used in the experiment

PERCENT WATER IN HYDRATED SALT
Calculations
1.Mass of hydrated salt;
36.04 – 33.04 = 3g
35.12 – 32.13= 2.99g
37.31 – 34.32=2.99g
2. Mass of anhydrous salt;
35.16 – 33.04 =2.12g
34.14 – 32.13 = 2.01g
36.40 – 34.32 = 2.08g
3. Mass of water;
36.04 - 35.16 = 0.88 g
35.12 - 34.14 = 0.98 g
37.31 - 36.40 = 0.91 g
