Part One: For the following clips, you will write a description that contains TWO sentences that are general statements that describe your overall impression of the dance, and TWO sentences that describe a few seconds from the dance that support the general statements you made including 3 component descriptions. (note: each entry should INCLUDE THE TITLE and be ONLY FOUR sentences long as demonstrated above. Clip 1- Water, Part 1, is an extremely powerful and moving piece as seen through the dancer’s incredibly fast, precise, and controlled movements. The song, although repetitive and simple in production, helped the dancers evoke their emotions, especially when the music picked up at certain parts and the dancers motions matched it. At one point in the piece, the four male dancers are in sync as they use elements of nature, such as the sand, while forcefully sliding their legs in an orderly fashion. As the song becomes louder in volume towards the end, the dancers’ arms aggressively swing in a circular movement while hitting and splashing the water. Clip 2- D-Man in the Waters In the beginning of the clip, the dancers are dressed in what appears to be army attire and present themselves as uniformed fashion. However, halfway through the clip, the dancers disperse sporadically as they begin to do their own original movements. Initially, the dancers anxiously scurry to form themselves into lines. After dispersion, the dancers individually move to different levels while utilizing motions. Clip 3- Movin’ Out Movin’ Out contained a great amount of high energy that was supported by an abundance of skillful and intricate moves. There was a great incorporation of group pieces, duets, and solos throughout the dance which showcased a significant amount of talent in various ways. A soloist quickly jumps from a pirouette into a leaping position, with all his limbs fully extended, in the matter of seconds. At one point in the dance, two dancers intimately work as one; they are followed by a group entering from one side of the stage who quickly shuffle their bodies to the other, right as a soloist forcefully twists his way on stage with his arms fully extended. Clip 4- Heaven In the beginning of the clip, there is an incredible sense of heavy drama and emotion which can be attributed to the song choice and the dancer’s movements. The dance incorporates a significant amount of Hip-Hop with a lot of the dancers remaining on the floor. The dance opens with suspenseful music as the dancers slowly crawl forward on their elbows and knees, luring the audience in. Two men in red sweatpants dramatically twist and swing their torsos and legs against the floor. Clip 5- Rich Man’s Frug Rich Man’s Frug is a very playful, flirtatious piece with the dancers executing movements very close to their bodies. It is evident that there is a main dancer with a separate set of core dancers. The main dancer opens walking in a seductive manner as she simultaneously flicks her arms while subtly swinging her hips. The main dancer mostly remains in the center of the stage making movements that are followed by the remaining dancers who are centered around her. Clip 6- Appartement Appartement is an extremely moving piece with the soloist conveying emotions that correspond to the rather depressing music. The soloist also uses the longevity of her body which allows the viewer to appreciate the human body. Throughout the piece, the dancer appears to be stuck and full of uncertainty as she forcefully pulls her arms and hands in front of her closed eyes. Against the wall, she swiftly jumps into a fully-extended stance with all extremities expanded. Clip 7- Meyer This dance is very fast-paced with each dancer having solos that are unique to the dancer, but still work well off one another. There seemed to be a great amount of complexity throughout this piece. As the dancer on the left finishes his solo, his body opens to the dancer next to him with his right arm gracefully sweeping in his direction. Each soloist intricately completes multiple combinations of dance movements that require great strength and discipline. Clip 8- Walklyndon Walklyndon is a rather odd, comical piece in which the dancers try to evoke laughter from the audience. Although there are parts of the dance that might be technical, the movements of the dancers do not seem to require much technical skill for the most. The dancers are successful in causing the audience to laugh as the line of dancers, who are biting the behinds of the dancers in front of them, casually pull down the pants of another dancer. Not much technique is required when the two dancers stand across from each other and foolishly fake slap the other’s face. Clip 9- Desihoppers In Desihoppers, the dancers move in unison throughout most of the piece which creates a very powerful vibe. This dance has hip-hop components with a cultural twist. In unison, the dancers lower themselves to the ground and dramatically hit the floor and hold themselves in a sideway position. The dance begins with simple hip-hop movements but is quickly followed by a lift as the dancers around them lean backwards with crossed arms, like a religious practice or custom. Part Two: 1. Although Heaven and Desihoppers both strongly incorporate the use of hip-hop, Heaven’s speed is slower and its composition is more disorganized than the fast-paced, unison Desihoppers. 2. Although the dancers in Meyer and Appartement dancers fully extend their limbs in most of their movements, the dancers in Meyer move in a much quicker manner while the soloist in Appartement moves in a much slower manner. 3. Water, Part 1 conveys a deep, empowering message to the audience whereas Walklyndon conveys a light-hearted, comical message to the audience. Lesson 02 Assignment Rubric Paragraph 1 + 1 point for taking perspective about how the two dances relate to each other. +1-2 additional points for how thoughtfully constructed the thesis statement is, and how much the rest of the paragraph supports that statement. Paragraph 2 + 1 point for writing 2 general sentences about the dance, and for mentioning Elements of Dance and Compositional Devices. +1-2 additional points for writing 2 sentences that contain descriptions of individual moments inside of the dance that support the general sentences, and that include 3 component descriptions (body part, verb, adverb). Paragraph 3 same as above Paragraph 4 + 1 point for mentioning other aspects of the dances that stood out to you. + 1-2 additional points for those aspects supporting your thesis statement. Paragraph 5 + 1 point for referring directly to the Lesson 1 reading. +1-2 additional points for expanding on the concepts from the reading from your experience with this assignment. Entire Assignment +1- 5 points for organization, grammar, and sentence structure (organization includes making sure that the entire paper focuses on the thesis) = 20 points maximum To be completed after finishing all of the reading and viewing, and watching the power point for this lesson if applicable. Write a five paragraph essay that utilizes the following format: (Your essay should be 12 pt. font, double spaced, 1 inch margins, and your paragraphs need to be indented, DO NOT NUMBER THE PARAGRAPHS) Please note that there are high expectations for the Assignments in this course. Please proofread your work carefully for spelling, grammar, and clarity of ideas. You must submit your work by 5 pm on the due date for it to be accepted. For information about how this assignment will be graded, please refer to Lesson 02 Assignment Rubric. Paragraph 1 Choose two of the dances from the Lesson 02 Viewings. For this paragraph, take a perspective in the form of a thesis statement about how the two relate to each other as you practiced in Part Two the Lesson 02 discussion forum. That should be the final sentence of the paragraph. The first part of this introductory paragraph should set up the perspective. Here is a sample introduction: (Please note I am replacing titles with "Dance A and B" and you should use the actual titles from the Lesson 2 viewings) "Although initially I thought Dance A and Dance B were fairly similar because both dances remain relatively close to the floor most of the time, I find the differences in these two dances to be more compelling as they reveal more clearly how opposing the choreographers' artistic intentions were. The most obvious difference is in how Dances A and B use energy and time. Dance A is incredibly smooth and consistently slow, and the dancers move as if they don't have any bones in their bodies throughout the entire piece. In Dance B there is a lot more variance as the dancers continuously alternate between sudden, sharp pulses in their bodies and soft, languid ripples. After taking some time to consider the meaning of the two dances based on how the bodies were moving, I have come to the conclusion that Dance A is making a comment about the steadfastness of nature, while I interpret Dance B to be addressing the unpredictability of life." Notice how the general descriptions of each of the pieces relate to the interpretations that are included on the thesis statement. It is not necessary to interpret the dances, the thesis can be about movement qualities that the pieces share, how they movement and music go together or don't, or any other myriad observations. The most important objective is that the thesis statement is very specific, and that the rest of the paragraph is related to that perspective. Paragraph 2 Describe one of the two dances that you talk about in paragraph 1. As you practiced in Part One of the Lesson 02 Discussion Forum, you should write 2 general sentences that describe the entire dance, and then 2 sentences that each describe a few seconds of choreography that stand out to you including 3 component descriptions, and that support your general sentences. Your last sentence of this paragraph should relate to your thesis statement. For example, you might say: "Dance A utilizes the concept of level well, as it contains many moments where the dancer's bodies appear suspended just above the floor. Throughout the dance, there are also multiple times when an individual dancer will make his or her way across the stage space with such smooth energy, it is as if he or she is moving through molasses. At one point at the start of the piece, a dancer delicately balances her torso on her two hands, elbows firmly bent underneath her stomach, while performing a painstakingly slow extension of her right leg parallel to the floor. Another moment in the dance that stood out to me was when one of the male dancers rotated his body balancing precariously on one foot, by executing a gradual spiral that started from his head and ended with his long leg reaching behind his body in a beautiful arc. When observing the fluidity, closeness to the earth, and consistent use of time in Dance A, one is reminded of the steady yet imperceptible growth of a tree or movement of a glacier." Paragraph 3 Do the same as above for the second dance you have chosen. Paragraph 4 Discuss in greater detail how you came to the conclusions that you make in your thesis statement. You could address other movement qualities that you observed, or additional aspects of the pieces such as music, costumes, lighting, title, etc. Make sure that any observations you make about the pieces support your thesis statement. For example, you might say: "The choreographers for Dance A and Dance B made other choices that strengthen my belief about their artistic intentions. In Dance A, the music was quite calm and cyclical, and it did not have a recognizable melody. The consistency of tones without an easily discernible pattern reminded me of how there is form inside the chaos of the natural world. In Dance B, the lighting alternated haphazardly between being bright while directly on a few dancers, and being more subdued and casting a soft glow on the entire stage. These sudden changes in the look of the stage support my hypothesis that the choreographer was intending to comment on the ways that a person's life can change in an instance...." Paragraph 5 In the final paragraph, discuss the necessary tools for and the benefits of being an active audience member, and how you used those tools to create your thesis statement. Include in your discussion ideas and concepts from Lesson 01 Readings, "The Audience Checklist." Make sure that you refer to the readings directly. For example, you might say: "After carefully examining Dance A and Dance B, I have come to the conclusion that to be an active audience member while watching dance, a person needs to consider the various ways the dancers interact with each other and the stage space. I think that how and where the dancers are placed on the stage gives an audience member a context for understanding the world created by the choreographer. Similarly, the specific qualities present in the interactions between the dancers offers some evidence about what is being communicated. In "The Audience Checklist," Marcia Siegel describes choreography as being a "game" and that an engaged audience member must uncover what he or she thinks the "rules" of that game are. I resonate with this idea as I very much enjoy looking for and discovering patterns, and I plan to continue with that level of engagement whenever I watch dance.

Analyzing two different dancing styles

Dancing has been part of human culture throughout human history. While the purpose
and style of dance can be varying from one culture to the other, the importance of dancing
however remain the same irrespective of cultural background of the dancer. Dancing helps in
connecting the mind and body hence promoting emotional and mental balance of an individual.
Watching someone dancing is also another form of leisure. Lartrina de Toilette and Jrive dancing
styles seem to be completely different based on how the dancers moved their body when
dancing, their response to the flow of the music, and the vigor or energy ...
