Global aging is occurring for two major reasons: More people are living longer, and fertility rates have declined in many regions of the world. Therefore, the social position and experiences of the elderly will vary across cultures. The greatest differences in the status of older adults are between traditional societies and the modernized world, with its rapidly changing values, norms, and lifestyles.
