Details:

For this assignment you will select a marginalized group (veterans, minorities, individuals with disabilities, etc.) and write a paper of 1,750 to 2,100 words that can be used as a resource when working with an individual from the selected group. Use peer-reviewed resources to support your use of a specific career theory as well as interventions with this population. An outline is required. The paper should include the following:

  1. An explanation of who the population is and why it is important for this group to receive career counseling
  2. Statistics on the group (e.g., how large, how many have employment problems, how many utilize career counseling)
  3. Discussion of career counseling theory to be used with the group (e.g., Minnesota theory of work adjustment). Include evidence supporting the use of this theory in the general population as well as within the group. Please note: If none are available, it is important to indicate that as well.
  4. Basic plan for counseling utilizing chosen theory (e.g., interview, use of assessment tools, explanation of theory)

  6. Local resources available to help the client obtain work (e.g., job center, training programs, support groups)
  7. Your conclusion on whether or not this plan is tenable and will work, based on the information listed above.
  8. A minimum of four scholarly references.

Introduction

In America, the African Americans form a minority group which has continued growing
over the years. In the past, most of the companies could not employ these groups since they do
not create part of the country's citizens. In other businesses, embracing the minority group has
become a challenge, and the managers would prefer to employ those citizens who have an
American origin (Alberg, Crankshaw, Bandera, Barnholtz-Sloan, Funkhouser, Moorman, &
Wang, 2016). As a result, the minorities have continued struggling to have a place in
corporations as one or more factors is distinguishing them from the rest of the majority. The
paper focuses on the African Americans minority group and their incorporation in organizations
as employees.
Explanation of the population
The African Americans form the largest group of the racial minority accounting to 13.3%
in America. The rate of unemployment of the African Americans has continued growing over the
last five years based on the ethnic discrimination aspect of most of the employers and managers.
Some companies cannot hire the blacks or the African Americans since they associate them with
criminal acts hence making them unsuitable for prestigious jobs. However, the blacks need to go
through career counselling as a way of making them feel in the right place. In this case, there is
the possibility of racial discrimination in the firms which may discourage them and make them
poor performers (Dau-Schmidt, 2016). However, the career counseling will enable each of them
to have the best mechanism to overcome the discrimination and work towards the achievement
of organizational goals and objectives. From the past, the people of America have not accepted

living with the African Americans, and some of them feel that they are a threat to the society.
Statistics show that the rate of discrimination of the blacks has promoted the large percentage of
the blacks in the prisons and jails. As a result, there is the lid of being blamed in a company for
failures that may occur in the course of operations.
Statistics on the group
Being the majority of the racial minorities, the blacks have 51% employed while 10%
unemployed. However, 38% of the blacks are not in the labor force as it includes the children
and the old and some men and women. Despite having gone through challenges, the blacks have
not just sat down and allowed discrimination to take a better part of their lives. Most of them
have become engaged in jobs that enable them to put food on the table. In this case, 76.8% of the
employed blacks work in companies where they receive private wages and salaries for the roles
which they play. On the other hand, 19.7% are government workers while the self-employed
form 3.4% of the total working blacks in America (Duran, George & Norris, 2014). As a result,
the blacks still form a large population of the employed minorities in America, and since most of
them have enrolled for education in various institutions, they will have an opportunity of
becoming employed in prestigious institution thus adding to the percentage of the employed in
the society. The blacks have twice the rate of unemployment more than the overall population
implying that despite having the large percentage of the employed, others do not have jobs yet.
Most of the working blacks over16 years work with the federal and local governments
representing 20% of the total employed black population. On the other hand, 33% of the black
women and 23% of the black men occupy management and professional jobs. As a result, black
employment in America is on the rise, and this has a positive impact on the African Americans
and their lives.

Career counseling theory

The African Americans would still require counseling on the careers which they should
become engaged in while in America. The application of career counseling theories will have to
apply to ensure that each of them joins the right career where he or she will fully utilize their
skills. In this case, some of the theories will include the theory of intelligence and giftedness,
Anne Roe's personality theory, and the social cognitive theories. The theory of intelligence and
giftedness will act as a source of motivation to the employees since they will recognize their
strengths despite the discrimination from other white races. On the other hand, the personality
theory will focus on the strengths which the employees have and their ability to achieve success
through the various roles and positions they hold in the American organizations (Jennings,
2017). In this case, the blacks will have to concentrate on how to strengthen their personality
traits and ways of succeeding as employees in the corporation. The fittest career theory will
include the Minnesota theory of work adjustment where the blacks will have to make neces...
