Midterm description and guidelines. Imagine that you get to feature an amazing organization that is solving a problem you really care about in front of a board that could contribute millions to the organization if they like your presentation. That is the scenario for your midterm, but instead of a board, you are presenting to 3 other classmates and at the end of that presentation, only one will emerge “funded”. Here is what you need to do: 1. Find a place “anthropological in nature” and study it well. Know its resources, geography and most importantly major problems. If you like you can feature a particular tribe or group instead. 2. Focus on one problem that you care about. Look at how the problem came to be (the roots – as per the social justice model). Look at why the problem continues. Ponder how it could be solved. 3. Chose an NPO (Not for profit organization) that is working to address the problem you are studying. You can chose an organization that is from the US or an organization located and run from the place (or by the people benefiting from the organization) you are focusing on. In the event that you can’t find an organization in your country you can propose a solution based on an organization somewhere else that you believe should consider working in your area. 1. Look up the mission statement and accountability for the organization. 2. Put together a FANTASTIC presentation to share in class with three other classmates. Let me clarify this- EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN PRESENTATION but does not have to present to the entire class, just to a jury of three other peers. We will form groups early next week so that you know the people you are working with. The day you present, I will provide forms for everyone to use when evaluating each other’s presentations. 1. Come to clas ON TIME and present the day we designate is “Midterm Day”. 2. Turn in an outline based on the following description: - Answer the following questions in outline form (no more than one page) 1. Name of organization as well as contact information (web address, etc) 2. Place – describe the place your organization benefits. (if there is more than one place, focus on only one). 3. Describe the problem that your organization seeks to alleviate. Give the needed background to understand the problem and the goal of your organization. 4. Mission statement and why you chose this organization. 5. When I…..I will……. Statement. (I will explain what this is in class). You need to integrate into your presentation the material from Theme Two that was posted on Blackboard as well as from class lectures on Cultural loss (anomie). (This includes Hans Rosling, Jared Diamond, Social Justice and an awareness of how the idea of different needs for food followers and food producers impact finding the root of a problem and the culturally sensitive solution set. Feature an organization that you think is sensitive to the dynamics of the culture you are working with. Finally connect in some way to all the films we have seen thus far (the first two episodes; Out of Eden and conquest from Guns, Germs and Steel and Crips and Bloods); the YouTube Cliphttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpKbO6O3O3M (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. ; and the following article, http://www.utilitarian.net/singer/by/1972----.htm (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. You will be responsible to generate a 7-10 minute presentation that showcases your understanding of the problem and advocates for the organization you have chosen to feature. Get creative- make a poster, bring props, make a PowerPoint, Prezi or Youtube to share with the group (If you need technology such as a lap top or tablet, make sure to bring your own and have it well charged). The day of the presentation, you will present to a small group. Each of you should have your own presentation and you will evaluate the other group members as well as yourself. Plan to be on time the day of the midterm. Finally, remember that on the day of your presentation, you will be competing against the other members of your group to “win”. I will not discuss how the winners will be selected prior to the presentation day, so give it your best. An NPO could be a charity, mission, NGO (Non-government organization), etc. Just because it is listed as a charity does not make it ineligible as long as the way that it operates is in line with social justice practices. While the following are wonderful and worthy causes, you may not select one of them as my goal is that you investigate places, problems and solutions you are not already familiar with: Red Cross United Way Habitat for Humanity Compassion International Invisible Children Also, the focus or your organization needs to be on human problems (again, animal rights are a worthy subject, but we are focusing on human situations). Focus on how Geography, Resources, Specialization, Conflict, and loss of cultural identity (anomie) lead to injustice and social disorder when studying about your chosen place and solution. Please focus on an area you don’t know about and that is rarely covered in mainstream media.
