The human immune system is a collection of structures and processes within the body that
provide the body’s defense against various types of infections, such as bacterial, viral, fungal and
parasitic infections. The major components of immune system include the lymph nodes, the spleen,
bone marrow, lymphocytes and thymus. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that
synthesize and store cells that fight pathogens and disease and are part of the lymphatic system.
The lymphatic system consist of lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow and thymus and lymph nodes.
Lymph nodes also contain lymph, a fluid that carries cells to different parts of the body. When the
body is fighting infection, lymph nodes can become enlarged and feel sore.

The spleen contains white blood cells that fight infection or disease. According to the National
Institute of Health (NIH), the spleen also helps control the amount of blood in the body and
disposes of old or damaged blood cells.
White blood cells are are produced by the bone marrow and their main immune function is to fight
various disease causing microorganisms.
Lymphocytes are compponentts of white blood cells whose main function is to protect the body
against diseases. The two types of lymphocytes cells are B cells and T cells. Lymphocytes have
their origin from the bone marrow, from which they mature to B cells, or they move to the thymus
gland from where they mature to T cells whose main purpose is to kill infected and cancerous
cells.
The B lymphocytes produce antibodies that attack bacteria. Killer T-cells are T-cells that kill cell
infected with viruses and other pathogens or are otherwise damaged. The helper T-cells help to
determine immune responses made by the body makes to a particular pathogen.
Thymus is a small organ where T-cells mature and part of the immune system that can trigger or
maintain the production of antibodies that can result in muscle weakness. Interestingly, the thymus
is somewhat large in infants, grows until puberty, then shrink slowly and is replaced by fat,
