National Security

National security is an important element in any country and governments must put
structures in place to help in ensuring that its citizens are safe to do their operations.
Psychologists play a crucial role in this area because they help in carrying out successful
interrogations on individuals suspected to bear information of relevance to the national security
of the United States. The American Psychological Association (APA) formulates guidelines on
how to handle different situations which form the psychological ethics. This body formed the
Psychological Ethics and National Security (PENS) body which makes policies about how
psychologists should be engaged in getting answers from war prisoners held in detention stations
outside the country (Kennedy, & Williams, 2011).

In a bid to help in the war on terror, the APA chose to look at the ethical implications of
the work psychologists did towards the national security of the United States. This move led the
APA to authorize the formation of the Psychological Ethics and National Security (PENS). Some
controversies emerged from the work of this new body. The first concern was whether to appoint
as members of the task force basic psychologists who served in the military actively instead of
others working within the United States government in the Defense Department. The team that
made up members of the body was severely criticized after it was discovered that they were
connected with the collection of intelligence, interrogations of detainees, as well as other
activities within the department of defense.
