HEALTH ISSUES AND BEHAVIOR
a. Introduction
In the contemporary society, obesity is one of the health issues that originates from one’s
behavior and is affecting millions of people globally. Obesity is a body condition to retain
excessive fat, which leads to one gaining abnormal weight (Wolin & Petrelli, 2009). Obesity has
many physical as well as medical conditions associated with it including heart problems,
respiratory problems, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, arthritis, cancer and failure to engage in
tasks due to the excessive weight of the body. Obesity can render one helpless, unable to engage
in day-to-day tasks; unable to fend for oneself and many other risks (World Health Organization,
2000). This essay discusses obesity in detail, giving possible interventions that can help to
prevent and reduce obesity.
b. Background information
According to Rippe and Theodore (2012), obesity is mainly caused by excessive eating,
genetic susceptibility or the lack of enough physical activity. However, Wolin and Petrelli (2009)
argue that medications, endocrine disorders, mental disorders and genes can also be the leading
causes of obesity. The increase in body mass equally requires that obese people use a lot of
energy to engage in the same task as their normal counterparts. This phenomenon has caused
many obese people to fail to engage in tasks, sometimes failing to fend for themselves
independently (World Health Organization, 2000).
Obesity is diagnosed through measurement of the body mass index (BMI). The body
mass index is a number found after dividing ones weight and the square of the height (kg/m2).
The body mass index is a scale of numbers where those falling less than 25 kg/m2 are considered
normal (National Health Service, 2016). On the other hand, those between 25 to 30 kg/m2 are

considered overweight and those over 30kg/m2 are regarded as being obese (National Health
Service, 2016). A BMI of 35-40 kg/m2 is considered to be severe obesity, one between 40-44.9
kg/m2 is considered morbid obesity whereas one between 45-50 kg/m2 is considered super
obesity (National Health Service, 2016).
Obesity is mainly associated with feeding on foods high in sugars and fats. Apart from
that, foods high in calories also causes fattening, leading to obesity. The high levels of sugars,
calories and fats is then converted into insoluble fats, which is deposited under the skin for
storage (National Health Service, 2016). The accumulation of such fats under the skin then leads
to obesity. Initially, obesity was associated with fertility and wealth, but has recently become the
leading health concern for the CDC. It was officially registered as a disease in 2013 by the
American Medical Association (World Health Organization, 2000).
c. Statistics
Statistics indicate that at least 36.5% of adults in the United States have obesity. This
figure represents more than one-third of US adults (Ogden et al., 2015). Apart from that,
statistics indicate that obesity is more prevalent among women as compared to men – 38.3% and
34.3% respectively. Equally, the middle-aged adults had higher levels of obesity at 40.2%, which
was higher as compared to the older adults – 37% and younger adults – 32.3% (Ogden et al.,
2015). The data also indicates that the prevalence of obesity has been rising steadily from 1999
to 2014 among adults but has stagnated among the children and adolescents through the same
period. Data from Center for Disease Control also shows that obesity was higher among nonHispanic blacks at 48.1%, follow...
