Mackenbach et al., (2008) compare the level of inequalities in self-assessed health as well
as mortality among 22 countries in Europe. This comparison is important so that measures can be
put in place to reduce inequalities in health. In their research method, mortality data was
obtained in regards to occupational class and educational level. Classification of deaths was done
in respect to their common causes. On the other hand, health and multipurpose surveys were
used to obtain data on self-assessed health. It was found that levels of socioeconomic inequalities
in health varied across the Europe. They can, however, be reduced by raising educational
opportunities, income distribution, or access to health care.
