Week 1 Discussion
In this discussion, you are assigned two rational expressions to work on. Remember to factor all
polynomials completely. Read the following instructions in order and view the example to
complete this discussion. Please complete the following problems according to your assigned
number. (Instructors will assign each student their number.)
x2 – 25

The domain of a rational expression is the set of all possible real numbers that we can
substitute for x, so that we get a real number as answer. That is we should be able to evaluate the
expression. We know we can’t divide a real number by 0, and a rational expression has
denominator (it is defined as a polynomial divided by another polynomial), we have to make sure
the denominator never becomes 0. So we have to eliminate the values of x that makes the
denominator 0 from the domain. These values of x are called excluded values. To find these x –
values, we solve the denominator. That is we set the denominator equal to 0 and solve for x.
these solutions of x are the excluded values, that have to be excluded from the domain. Some
