Introduction

The term democracy is a common term that is mention from time to time in different
settings. Democracy is commonly used to mean a scenario where a system is inclusive by
allowing both the common citizens and their leaders to participate in decision-making processes.
Democracy is used to establish the legitimacy of a particular system (Lindgren & Persson, 2011).
It should, however, be noted that democracy is not only applicable in nations but is also
applicable to social institutions and organizations like homes, business communities among other
social institution. Appreciating democracy is called for in many scenarios. On the other hand, in
a scenario where democracy is not appreciated, then we can say that there is a democratic deficit
in such a case.
Definition of Democratic Deficit
As stated earlier, democratic deficit basically means that democratic principles and
practices are not appreciated in a particular setting. The Democratic deficit also means that the
principles of democracy are overlooked and a system that is often dictatorial is established. We
have had cases of institutions that have preached the principles of democracy but have not been
faithful enough to practice these practices. This may mainly be as a result of legal gaps existing
the current laws or lack of goodwill from the leaders to follow the rule of law (Lindgren &
Persson, 2011). Insufficiency of democratic practices can also be used effectively to refer to the
democratic deficit.
