a. Psychoanalytic theory
The psychoanalytic theory was developed by Sigmund Fred who argued that human behavior
is attributed to interaction of three parts of the human mind: id, ego, and superego. The theory is
of the structural form and its emphasis is on conflicts among parts of the mind and their role in
shaping behavior and personality. Freud posits that an individual’s personality develops in their
childhood and shaped through psychosexual stages. During all five stages of the psychosexual
theory of development, a child is conflicted with biological drives and social expectations.
Successfully navigating the conflicts results in mastery of all stages and eventually achieving full
maturity. However these ideas have been widely criticized owing to their focus on sexuality as
the primary driver of personality development.
