Description

Provide an explanation of if/where/how does Active Directory support application security.

The paper must be at least 10 pages (2,000-2,500) words and be in APA format.

Each group must have 5 academic sources. Academic sources do not include wikis, messageboards, support forums, etc. Do not copy and paste large blocks of text from your sources!

As with any research project, make sure to take a position, defend with works cited, and conclude.

Each group will be required to provide a 10 minute oral presentation on Sunday, March 12. The presentation needs to be in power point and each group member must attend the presentation. Talking while another group is presenting will not be tolerated! I will lower your group’s score if I must.

Each group must upload both the paper and the powerpoint presentation to iLearn before dismissal on Sunday.

ACTIVE DIRECTORY AND APPLICATION SECURITY

Introduction
Active directory abbreviated as the AD is a network operating system which was initially
built by Microsoft besides windows 2000 (Desmond, 2013). The operating system has evolved in
line with releases of windows over the years. The active directory helps administrators manage a
broad range of information that can be globally or widely distributed efficiently from a central
repository. The administrator can avail the information to as few or as many users as they wish
immediately the information is added to the operating system (Desmond, 2013). The types of
information added include computer information, information about users or user groups,
information about services, printers, and applications (Desmond, 2013). The paper seeks to
answer the question of if the active directory supports application security when the active
directory supports application security and lastly how the active directory supports application
security.
Does Active Directory Support Application Security?
Active Directory serves as the center of all domain networks of windows. It provides
multiple services referred to as active directory services which control handling of the stored
information together with the information’s users and the devices used (Desmond, 2013). The
active directory has a server referred to as domain controller which responsible for ensuring the
security of applications through verification and authentication of user credentials and definition
of access rights.
Other services that enhance application security and which are provided and enabled by
the active directory include lightweight directory services, certificate services, federation
services, and rights management services. Active directory light-weight services (AD LDS) was

originally referred to as active directory application mode (ADAM) operates on a windows serve
and works in conjunction with the active directory services in that they both share codes. Unlike
directory services, however, light-weight directory services do not need domain creation and
controllers to function. It acts as a sink for directory data from directory services. Light-weight
directory services additionally differ with directory services in that multiple activities of LDS
can use the same serve to run concurrently. Then there is the active directory certificate services
(AD CS) which sets up the public key infrastructure for the premises. It enables activities such as
creation, validation, and revocation of public key certificates for organization’s users. Using
these certificates, files and emails can be encrypted, and network traffic managed. Another
service enabled by active directory is the federation services (AD FS) which is one-time sign-on
service. The service enables web users in an organization to use multiple internet resources using
a single set of credentials which are centrally located. The service does away with the hassle of
having to use different sets of credentials dedicated to each web service. Lastly, the other service
is the active directory rights management services (AD RMS) which was formerly known as
rights management services before the launch of Windows 2008. It works closely with the
windows server, and they are both shipped together. It limits access to applications such as
email, websites and other operations that one can perform on them. It does so using encryption
and selective functionality denial.
From the above, it is clear that active directory is a combination of services that work
together or separately to ensure that responsible access and handling of applications in a
computer. Through active directory services, the security of computer applications is ensured.
These services, therefore, show that active directory’s primary work in a computer system is to
ensure the security of applications and other ...
