ATH 175 Miami University Peoples Of The World Globalization Questions
1. Answer one question from each reading. Be sure to indicate which question you are answering.Answer one of the following on Sahlins , “The Original Affluent Society”What are the two meanings of “affluence” described by Marshall Sahlins in “The Original Affluent Society.”How have travel writers and economists misunderstood hunter-gathering societies over the years? How can the production of surplus food lead to hunger? Why are more people hungry in the contemporary global world system than would have been in the prehistoric hunter-gatherer period?Answer one of the following on Friedl, “Society and Sex Roles”In “Society and Sex Roles,” Frield challenges the preconception that all foraging societies are egalitarian. How does she do so? Provide an example.Briefly compare and contrast gender relations and equality in the four foraging societies Frield cites: The Washo Indians, The Hadza of Tanzania, The Tiwi of Australia, and the Eskimo (Inuit). What is her argument? So far, we’ve looked mostly at the example of !kung or Ju/’hoansi foragers. How would they compare to the groups Friedl describes here? What would you need to know about the Ju/’hoansi to adequately understand gender relations? What, according to Friedl, determines women’s access to prestige, power, and equality? In what way does this apply to your own society?Answer one of the following on Roland, Cuban Color in Tourism and La Lucha Chapter 2, “’Blackness’ and Race Matters in Cuba” (20-43).Roland identifies three factors that shape what she calls “the Cuban construction of race.” Identify and explain each of these. Do the same factors shape the construction of race in the U.S.?How did the relationship with the United States following the Spanish-American War shape “race” in Cuba? What did this mean for Cubans of color? How, culturally, does “whitening” (blanqueamiento) operate in Cuba? How, according to Roland does “race” become gendered and and gender become “raced” in Cuba. What is she getting at here?Identify and discuss what you think is one key point in this chapter. To what extent to you agree with or disagree with Roland’s argument?2. Midterm Essay on Culture and GlobalizationA key concept we have introduced in this course is “globalization.” For this essay, I’d like you to develop a five-part essay that looks at globalization as a broad cultural and material process that connects people and societies variably across the planet. I’ll ask you to explain global processes, how these emerge in selected course materials, and how they play out in your own life. The format is what I call a “structured essay,” which means simply that I’ll ask you to respond to each of five individual but thematically interrelated prompts. Each section is worth up to thirty points and will be graded individually, but as you address these, you might keep the larger essay theme in mind, making connections where appropriate. Note that short, vague replies not supported by specific relevant examples will not receive full credit. Also, I want you to demonstrate that you have read and thought about course readings. If you don’t draw from these, I may assume that you haven’t read them and evaluate your work accordingly. Note that I do not expect you to cite outside sources for these essays. What I’m looking for:I’m looking for a good paragraph or two per section that responds to the question or questions fully but succinctly in complete, well-written sentences. (By good paragraph I mean 3-5 coherent sentences including an identifiable topic sentence and supporting examples.) I’ll also look for signs that you are engaging course materials (or you own experience) by citing specific relevant examples to support your responses. Again, I also hope you’ll make some effort to linking sections of the essay together. (Here’s an example of what I mean: “There are both parallels and specific differences in the ways globalization plays out in Bangladesh and in my own life here in Ohio….).A note on citing sources:If you refer to or quote assigned readings, you should cite these at the end of the passage cited, for example (Roland: 24). If you cite other types of course materials, you might use the following formats: (Life and Debt, film), (Module 4-Introduction to Globalization lecture), (Planet Money T-Shirt Project, “Nixon and Kimshi: How the Garment Industry Came to Bangladesh”). I do not expect you to use outside sources, but if you do, you MUST cite these both in the text of your paper and in a reference list at the end of your paper. You should also include a link or URL for your source, so that I can verify it. I urge you to be cautious, particularly with outside sources. If you fail to cite these, you may end up failing the midterm (or even the course) for violating the university’s academic honesty policy. The Essay Prompts:Please answer each section in order and label each section. You may also cut and paste the prompts into your document and then follow these.Introduction-Explaining Globalization: Drawing on lectures, readings, films, and your global commodities assignment, how would you explain globalization to a non-anthropology student? What example might you use to illustrate your explanation? Why is it important and useful to think about our world as interconnected? The Planet Money T-Shirt Project: Identify and briefly discuss two specific things you have learned about globalization and the global economy from the Planet Money T-Shirt Project? Support your discussion with examples from the series. If you were to undertake your own research project on a global commodity and the global interconnections that characterize it, what would you chose, and what would you expect to find. How would it travel. How might it impact both producers and consumers?Module Four Readings on Globalization (Lappé & Collins, Fuentes & Ehrenreich, Brennan): How do these three articles approach globalization or global history from distinct, but overlapping vantage points? Briefly compare their approaches and explain how they are distinct but nonetheless interconnected. Again, use examples from the articles to support your discussion.Contemporary Globalization in Cuba and Jamaica (Roland, Chaps. 1-2, Life and Debt): How is contemporary globalization impacting economic and social life in contemporary Cuba and Jamaica? How do global tourists experience these countries in very different ways from ordinary citizens? Again, support your discussion with relevant examples.Reflecting on Globalization and You: Finally, based on what you’ve learned so far, how specifically do anthropologists study globalization processes? What is the most significant lesson your learned about globalization in this course to date? Provide and briefly discuss two examples of how global processes play out in your own life.Planet Money's T-Shirt Project: https://www.npr.org/2013/12/02/248151300/planet-mo...
