Dementia is used in reference to a group of symptoms that comprise of memory loss,
difficulty with thinking, language or problem solving, mood changes, perception, and behavior
changes (Jenkins, 2012). The most prevalent form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease and is
characterized by progressive deterioration in an individual’s cognitive functions. An individual
also exhibits neuropsychiatric symptoms like agitation, depression, and apathy. As the condition
progresses, patients are robbed of their independence and survive for a limited amount of time,
often in assisted living (Jenkins, 2012). The condition is accompanied by tremendous burdens on
caregivers and family members. Nurse practitioners are equipped with education that imparts
values and attitudes necessary for best practice. However, such attitudes may fail to reflect in the
care, prompting a change of strategies to accommodate the needs of this population.
Possible Negative Treatment of People with Dementia
Stigma is a primary concern for dementia patients and care partners. Patients have
reported misunderstandings based on myths and misconceptions surrounding the condition.
