History
Being a nationwide voluntary health Non-profit organization, American Cancer Society
was founded in the year 1913 on 23rd, May by fifteen businesspeople and physicians in New
York City. The initial founding name was American Society for the Control of Cancer until the
year 1944 when the current name American Cancer Society was adopted. It is considered as one
of the largest and old non-profit health organizations globally (Fleming, Eyre & Pogue, 2010).
The initiative to start the American Cancer Society was attributable to the many deaths that were
occasioned on a yearly basis and approximated at 75,000 only in the United States. The biggest
agenda of the non-profit organization was to create public awareness in relation to cancer since it
had cloaked a climate of denial and fear amongst United States citizen and beyond. This
campaign included educating nurses, doctors, patients and the general public with funding
research opportunities to acquire more knowledge and awareness on cancer (Fleming, Eyre &
Pogue, 2010).
Organizational Structure
American Cancer Society is made up of various hierarchical positions according to roles
and responsibilities performed. The organizational structure is highly decentralized from the staff
lead of Chief Executive Officer. Besides this, there exist various departmental heads with their
deputies who control and supervise designated employees in various sections according to
