Scenario-Based Assignment: Interview [Student Name] | IT-340 Module 2 Question #1 What are some foundational concepts and components of a computer network? Answer Computer networks are made up individual electronic devices connected to other devices. These devices not only include things like PCs, printers, phones, tablets, but also the network hardware required to connect to one another such as cables, modems, servers, routers, switches, and hubs. Each of these devices must have some sort of network interface/adapter to allow the device to connect to a network. Networks can vary in size, security, and complexity. The OSI model outlines the various layers of computer networks from physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation, and application. Each of these layers have distinct purposes, hardware configurations, and software protocols. Question #2 What are the components of an internet protocol version four (IPv4) IP address? Answer IPv4 IP addresses are 32-bit addresses that have a different format based on the numeral system being used (e.g. binary, decimal, hexadecimal). Most commonly it is seen it its decimal format as follows: Format Example ###.###.###.### 192.168.0.0 Each section delimited by a dot is known as an octet, this is because in binary form each of these sections is made up of 8 bits. This means the maximum number allowed within an octet is 255. A subnet mask is also used and it has the same format, however it typically either has the 255 in an octet or a 0. This is to assist networking hardware in identifying the devices within a subnetwork of a network. The IPv4 protocol has a lot of competition for IP addresses, as such it is being deprecated in favor of IPv6 which supports many more devices for larger networks now that many people have multiple devices that connect to the internet. Question #3 When should a network administrator assign static IP addresses to network devices? Answer The primary reason to use static IP addresses is for FTP and Web servers. Static IP addresses are superior when it comes to name resolution across WANs (wide area networks). Additionally, static IP addresses provide better production for network security problems. Lastly, some devices do not support DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), thus using all static IPs on a network where not all devices Scenario-Based Assignment: Interview [Student Name] | IT-340 Module 2 support DHCP would prevent any potential clashes from occurring when the DHCP automatically assigns IP addresses.
