Museum Visit Journal ARTS-1301 Section 61005 Museum Journal Assignment. Professor: Patrick O'Neill , patricko'neill@dcccd.edu Assigned: September 13th Due: November 1st Description A Gallery visit journal is a written personal account of a local art gallery or art installation. Viewing art in person is the best way to understand and experience the full impact of the work in its physical context and environment. 1. Location is a dedicated space to display artwork, can be formal galleries, large installations, outdoor art, improvised art, etc. 2. that the artwork has been placed in the location with the intent for public display 3. The ability to allow for thoughtful reflection on location. Impressions of the visit can focus on multiple pieces, . . The gallery visit journal will function as a way to work out several concepts presented in class. A few possible ideas to consider as you write into your journal: Where is the location of the gallery? What is their philosophy behind the artwork they display? What context does the gallery frame its work? How does the space feel as you move through it? How does the space support the artwork? Focus on a few pieces that stand out and briefly describe them. How successful is the gallery at its purpose? New ideas and insights gained from the visit? • Would you visit the gallery again some other time? . . This exercise does not require a thesis statement. The structure should be solely based on observation and reflection. Format There will be two parts to the assignment. The rough notes. And an essay based on the notes. 1) Note taking made during your visit is highly encouraged. Its best to commit your best for you, as long as you can recall and organize your experience through your ideas to paper as you experience them. You can use any notation method that works journal. Acceptable notation forms include, but not limited to: • Essay form. • Narrative Bullet points • Photographs with captions. Sketches and notes. Hand written in a book or notes taken with a phone. 2) Essay is simply fleshing out the ideas and impressions made during the note taking process and transforming it into a more formal written essay. The final essay should be that of a formal analysis. Meaning, the essay should rely on your own personal experience and how you 'read' the galley and the artwork displayed. . Structure In the first paragraph, called the introduction, you will include: the name of the gallery, address, title of any featured show. a description of the building and the gallery space. • Impressions of the art being shown. Permanent collections. o Shows or features. • Impact of the art & how the galley contributed to the impact of the art. O From that point, the rest of the formal analysis should include not only a description of the gallery space, but impressions made with the artwork on display as well. Your paper should not be a random flow of ideas about the work (i.e. stream of consciousness writing). Rather, your paper should have a sense of order, moving purposefully through your description with regard to specific elements of architecture and relationship to the art space. Finally, in your conclusion (the final paragraph) you should end your paper with an strong, subjective impression of the visit and impact on your impressions of the gallery and the art that resides within. B ino M It is important to remember that your interest here is strictly formal. In other words, you are strictly relying on your ability to visually understand the layout of the gallery as well as the artwork that is displayed. Remember too that your analysis should not be just a mechanical, physical description. Please use descriptive language and adjectives to describe the work. Begin with a general description of the work, and then move on to the more specific elements. In addition – do not share your notes or essay with other students and please do not work on your paper with another student. This is considered plagiarism and will result in a failing grade for the entire class. You can group up and go together, but each person should be journaling their own personal impressions in their own notebooks.
