Gendered Talk

Read Chapter 7 in your textbook. Then, go to the following link to access Sex, Lies and Conversation; Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other? by Deborah Tannen. Dr. Tannen, professor of linguistics at Georgetown University, is the author of "You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation". Using terms and concepts from the textbook chapter, write a critical review of Tannen’s arguments.

Your paper must be formatted in the following manner:

  • Begin your paper with an introduction that identifies Tannen’s main thesis.
  • Describe Tannen’s arguments and the evidence she uses to validate them in subsequent paragraphs in relation to this week’s textbook readings. Your paper must include at least two specific references to conversations or events described by Tannen. You must also make at least two specific references to concepts, terms, and/or ideas from this week’s textbook readings. Paraphrase information most of the time; quotes, including conversation transcripts from the chapter, should not be more than 15% of the entire paper.
  • In no more than one to two paragraphs, explain whether you agree with Tannen’s assessment on gendered talk and why or why not. Use personal life examples and/or information from external sources.
  • End your paper with a separate concluding paragraph that summarizes the main points of the paper and reaffirms the thesis statement.
  • Cite all sources in-text, and include a separate reference page. For information regarding APA, including samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, located within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar.

communicate. In this case, she reveals that women are often free to communicate to each other
and particularly when conflicting events come up during their interaction. The same seldom
happens in men. By so doing, it is possible for women to resolve their differences before they
can escalate to unmanageable levels. On the contrary, men will rarely discuss their issues and
