Introduction
Croall, Mooney and Munro (2015) assert that almost everyone understands the
importance of law in the society but very view have an idea of what criminal justice is. Under the
social contract theory, members of the society have allowed some people in the same society to
make laws which creates a safe environment for everyone to operate in. The members are
supposed to abide by the laws and rules even though they are not the ones in charge of the
enforcement since the enforcement of these laws is emphasized by the criminal justice system.
Jackson (2003) defines criminal justice as a social control system through which the appropriate
laws, institutions, and practices ensure that there is control and prevention of crime as well as the
sanctioning of those who break the laws. In a democratic society, the purpose of the criminal
justice system is to meet the common interest of all the society members which is to live in a
supportive and safe social environment that guarantees respects to human rights and appropriate
level of security (Dobryninas et al., 2012). This is based on the equal application of the law to all
the people in the society. It is good to note that in this regard, the principles of criminal justice of
equal and just application of the law are not applied, mechanically in the society. Its application
depends on historical, geographical, cultural and other developments factors. The issues of
criminal justice in the society, its performance and principles have been and will continue to be a
subject of academic and political debates. However, the criminologists have suggested severally
that criminal justice problem cannot be resolved by academicians or politicians but by contacts
and effective communication with the society members (Nonet, 2017). Therefore, in this
context, the discussion below seeks to analyze the concept of criminal justice, its connection to
the society from different perspectives and the implications of the mass media influence on how
