Literary Analysis
“Barn Burning” by William Faulkner is one of those short stories that detail out the story
about a son having the choice of choosing between loyalty to family, his father, in this case, and
loyalty to his country and justice. The father, Abner Snopes is known to be responsible for the
burning of burns and in this case, Abner is responsible for the burning of the barn of Mr. Harris.
The burning results from a scenario where Abner Snopes lets loose of his hog which goes into
Mr. Harris farm, for which Mr. Harris charges Abner Snorpes for failing to heed to his warnings.
Mr. Harris, at the beginning, warns Abner of the hog’s slip into his cornfield. He even goes an
extra mile as to offer or give Abner Snopes ample wire to help with the caging of the animal to
prevent it from going back into the farmer’s cornfield. Following the warnings, Abner Snopes’
hog still finds its way into Mr. Harris’ field which then becomes an issue for Mr. Harris as well
as to Snopes (Faulkner, William, and Otto Neugebauer). This justifies that, sometimes
individual judgment is much more important than family loyalty, for some reasons.
Snopes is then charged a dollar for pound fee as a result of not heeding to the warning which
then leads to Snopes giving a warning to Mr. Harris himself. This is to mean that when the barn
of Mr. Harris was burnt, it did not come as a surprise but there lacks evidence to back this
information. Sarty now has been asked to choose between the loyalty to his father by his Abner

Snopes himself and the loyalty to the justice system. Abner, on this line of thought is quick to tell
Sarty, “You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain’t going to have any blood to stick
to you”. Sure enough, when it comes to testifying in court, Sarty is quick to take the father’s side
and pick a side on loyalty to the family instead of telling the truth which then leads to Mr. Harris...
