Citation Practice Homework The following pages include information from the 3 different articles you were given to create a reference page. Use the reference page you previously created to cite the student information in the following three practices. DIRECTIONS: 1. Read the student version carefully and compare it to the original research article’s words. 2. If the student summarized information from the article, cite it correctly using in text or parenthetical citation (see APA Manual pp. 171 and 177) as the following practice directs. Explanation of above corrections: 1) I used parenthetical citations as per the directions for this example (using p. 171 & 177 in the APA Manual. 2) The first sentence is a summary and must be cited. 3) The second sentence incorporated a direct quote from the reference, so the reference’s words had to be in quotation marks and cited with author, year, and page number. I left out words from the original, so I placed . . . where the words were deleted. I also added a word within the quotation, so I placed [ ] around the word I added. I also used p. 177 APA Manual to see how to cite using 3 authors after the first time. 4) The third sentence is cited because it was the FIRST sentence of a summary. 5) I did not, however, need to cite the next sentence or refer back (the author continues…) as the reader will be aware that the information came from the previous citation and would not be confused (as per bottom of p. 15 APA Manual). PRACTICE #1: Use IN TEXT (not parenthetical) citations for the student version of the original research article. Further research is needed to explore various strategies to help these students develop their writing.
