Gangs in Prison
Introduction
When an individual mention about prison gangs, what comes into one’s mind is chaotic
bands of racist or even violent thugs. Prison gangs refer to inmate organizations whose
membership is restrictive, have existed in perpetuity, and mostly requires a personal lifetime
commitment. Few people have the thought of gangs as refined organizations. In this light, most
people do not think of prison gangs as units that control the prison black market, settle conflicts,
and balance the inmate’s demands among other things (Skarbek 710). Apparently, gang units
meet the demands of correctional officers or even adjust the competitive demands of their gang
members. According to Skarbek’s argument, gangs form a unit to create order in the midst of
outlaws and create alternative institutions of governance to propagate illegal activities. The
secretive societies of inmates’ culture and gang politics are the reason why people form gangs
and have the influence of power beyond the prisons and over crime. This paper extends the
beyond the tragic and irrational captives society (Skarbek 714). Primarily, gangs in prison tend to
have both constructive and undesirable impacts on the community, victims, and offenders.
History of gangs in prison

Surname 2
Prison gangs emerged during the 1950s when the groups became dominant in the
correctional facilities in America. As Lyman defines, prison gang is an organization that operates
within the system of the prison as a self-preserving crime oriented entity, which comprises of a
group with an established chain of command and code of conduct. Historically, prisoners as
social groups operate within the prison setting and interplays between the street and prison gangs
(Fleisher, Mark & Decker 3). To understand the history and study of prison gangs requires a
broader understanding of their demographics and distribution in various American prisons. The
first prison gang revealed in American history was Gypsy Jokers whose formation took place in
the Washington state prisons during the in the 1950s. The strength of such prison gangs such as
Gypsy Jokers depends on the numbers of their membership. Apparently, about a hundred and
thirteen gangs existed in 1985 with thirteen thousand active members in the American prisons.
By the year 2002, approximately three hundred thousand prisoners had an affiliation to inmate
groups. As much as the numbers of prison gang member do not include directly involved
members such as visitors, some people smuggle drugs and engage in illegal trade thereby
influencing the gangs to become powerful and influential (Fleisher et al. 3).
The emergence of prison gangs was much less of a peaceful affair. Most severe cases of
prison gangs relate to the responsibility of jails misconduct, assault of fellow inmates, drug
trafficking, intimidation of staff and sexual misbehavior. Furthermore, the prison groups have
had to expand their reach to the street level market in drug trafficking among other illicit trade.
By far, the inmate organizations continues to be a threat to the administration of American prison
by academics and staff alike. Despite the history of violence, prison gangs are organized and
highly structured collectives with strict internal rules and hierarchies with complete settings
(Fleisher et al. 4).

Structure and Organization of Prison gangs
Prison gangs have much in common with any other organization. Foremost, prison gangs have a
structure that usually has one individual who acts as the designated leader that overlooks the
council of its members and makes final decisions for its members. In essence, the structure of
prison gangs has ranks, which forms a hierarchy to make it look like an organized crime as
compared to various gangs distinct from...
