Prostitution along Immigration Routes
Prostitution is a harsh reality for many women in the world who practice it as a way of
sustaining their lives and those of their families. The factors that lead to prostitution cannot be
clearly delineated but looking into the past of the United States, it is evident that it started with
the slave trade. For centuries across the world, people were bought and sold into slavery. This
slave trade also included the selling and buying of sex slaves. Across the world, today,
prostitution and human trafficking have become some of the biggest problems that the world
faces. Prostitution can be defined as the selling of sexual services often by women. The video

immigrants face challenges crossing the Senora desert from Mexico into the U.S. This area has a
host of brothels and nightclubs where many immigrants work to pay their traffickers through the
money they earn through sexual services.
The social structure theory is directly tied to this video of prostitution along the
immigration routes. According to Siegel (2000), the social structure theory advances the
hypothesis that crimes vary depending on the different elements of a particular social structure.

people in different places. “Social structure theories suggest people’s places in the
socioeconomic structure influence their chances of becoming a criminal” (Siegel, 2000). That
way, the place of the women in the immigration routes influences their chances of p...
