Seven habits of highly effective people
As people strive to improve their personal effectiveness, they either try changing their attitude or
behavior. These approaches most of the time tend to fail since the only way to achieve real change
is by changing ourselves through changing our perceptions of the world. Covey noticed a change
in how people defined success by studying over two hundred years of literature. He saw that during
early times’ people viewed success based on character ethic e.g. Modesty, humility, temperance
and integrity. This changed during the 1920s when success was seen as a function of public image,
personality, attitudes and behavior or “personality ethic” (Covey, Stephen R). Nowadays, people
search for quick fixes in the hope of saving time and effort while achieving their goals. These
quick fixes only provide short term solutions since they overlook the fundamental issues. “The
way we see the problem is the problem,” (Covey, Stephen R) people must undergo paradigm shifts

interdependence. The last habit embodies all other habits and focuses on continuous growth and
improvement.
