POST 1:

  • The piece I chose was the 1812 Overture, composed by Tchaikovsky. Briefly, the piece is supposed to narrate the stages of war, from preparation, to conflict, to victory. The instrumentation consists of an orchestra, a brass and woodwind section, and a percussion section with such components as cannons, and large bells. The first five minutes of the piece are subtle and convey the start of, or preparation for, a war. The main performing force is the orchestra. The stringed instruments combine and have a polyphonic texture because high, mid, and low register instruments harmonize. Before the two minute mark, the woodwind, brass, and percussion forces enter with a polyphonic and poly rhythmic texture. The orchestra and woodwinds share a call and response for several seconds, then the different brass sections share a call and response. These elements correspond to the beginning of the war. The woodwinds increase in pitch. The sound of all the sections increase as the tempo speeds up as well. It can be assumed that the battle has begun when the violins, trumpets, and drums play somewhat dissonant notes. Tchaikovsky also composed this section with a poly rhythmic texture to depict the chaos and violence of the ensuing battle.

POST 2:

  • From the partnership of Robert and Clara Schumann, "Carnaval" op.9 №11 "Chiarina," creates a flow of two combined forces that is destined to the genre of a piano character piece; overall a devotion of the title referring to Clara. This piece easily can be recreated by the amateur as a piece for solo piano performance. It creates sensation of dance like or folk mood conveyed in a triple meter and fast tempo, that suggest a purpose and building of relationship between the two music composers: Robert and Clara. This duet also adjoins the “aaba’ba” form and aids for homophonic texture and leaping melody throughout.

The 1812 Overture is a significant event in the history of Russia. It commemorated the
defense by the Russian military against the invasion by the Napoleon in 1812. The post
effectively illustrates the event by incorporating the different stages of the event as postulated by
Tchaikovsky in his composition. The post narrates the stages involved during the war from the
preparation for the war, the co...
