In his masterpiece, "Things Fall Apart", Chinua Achebe has given lengthy and
informative details concerning life in African society before and after the European colonialism.
The author focuses heavily on the effects of colonialism and the invasion of the whites to the
lifestyles of the native people of Africa. The piece solely focuses on the life of a man, by the
name Okonkwo. He lives in the midst of nine villages and is specifically from the clan of
Umofia. Apart from being a warrior, Okonkwo is also a clansman and a farmer. From his life, a
better understanding of the African culture and history is derived.
The first thing that is clearly evident in the African culture is polygamous marriage. From
the piece, Okonkwo is a husband to three wives. They include; the mother of Nwoye, Ekwefi the
second wife and Ojiugo the mother to Nkechi (Chinua, 1958). Marrying more than one wife was
a tradition in the African society before the invasion of the white man. Secondly, farming was an
economic activity as well as the source of food in the ancient African community. From the
