See the next page for details of what you are expected to do the Business Report INTE2043 Business IT Business Report Your Task: "Neighbourhood Nursery" is a small-sized local gardening retail business. The business employs eight staff; the owner (Daisy Oliver), a senior staff (gardener/landscaper), and six junior staff. Because of recent growth in business, the senior staff cannot attend all customers satisfactorily. As a result some customers do not receive the level of service that the shop is famous for. Neighbourhood Nursery occupies an area a short distance from a suburban strip shopping centre (one located on a main road). The Nursery consists of a large shed, occupying an area equivalent to a small house, plus an area of land about the size of two suburban house blocks. The shed has the sales area, a small office, an enquiry counter and a display of plant, fertilisers and garden ornaments. The rest of the block has displays of plants for sale. Daisy has decided to introduce a computer system to capture knowledge of the senior staff and help junior staff to provide a more professional and personalised service to customers. The system will start by recording each customer's needs along with the senior staff's recommendations. As the number of recommendations on record grows the junior staff will be able to provide similar recommendations to customers with similar needs; effectively generating a "Knowledge Base" system. Daisy also wants to replace the current inadequate and out-of-date point of sale system. This will keep better records of sales and so will help the owner in her bookkeeping and taxation chores. Daisy has engaged your services as a consultant to recommend information systems to be used by the Neighbourhood Nursery. After initial conversations, you have established the following high-level requirements   A Point of Sale system which: ◦ manages sales transactions, including scanning barcodes attached to products ◦ records all transactions (these can be downloaded to a spreadsheet or accounting system) ◦ works with credit cards and interfaces with Neighbourhood Nursery's bank and EFTPOS terminals supplied by the bank A knowledge-base system that: ◦ can record customer queries and recommendations made by senior staff ◦ allows search on previous queries and recommendations (the search facility must be quick and easy to use). It is expected that a local area network will be required to support these systems along with a connection to the Internet, These systems must have a low initial cost and be able to cope with moderately expanding business. Your report must: • describe the benefits that the client should expect to come from using the information systems • must make recommendations about: ◦ information systems software and services ◦ network equipment and installation required to support the information systems ◦ computers and peripheral hardware and installation required to support the information systems ◦ systems and procedures needed to ensure security of the systems. Look at the marking guide to make sure you have covered everything. How to do the assignment: You will need to research what Point of Sale systems and knowledge base systems could meet the Nursery's requirements. You will also need to research the computer hardware and network hardware that is needed to support the operation of the information systems. You will need to be precise (that is recommend particular systems and makes and models of equipment) to give an estimate of the cost of your recommendations. The recommendations must be written in the form of a report. You should refer back to the work you did in Business Computing 1 (if you did this course) for guidance on report writing. Your report should, as a minimum, have the following sections:  Executive summary – one page outline for management to read quickly  Introduction – provides readers with the background necessary for them to understand the report  Body of the report – remember: ONE idea per paragraph – use headings to show major sections and make the report easy to read  Recommendations – actions that the client should take to implement the computing systems – in point form. All information used in the assignment MUST be referenced using RMIT's referencing standards. If your work is not correctly referenced, you will fail the assignment. A note about the Executive Summary Sometime, busy managers do not read the whole of reports given to them. They may only read the Executive Summary. So the Executive Summary must tell the whole story of your report in only one page. At a minimum, the Summary should tell:  about the recommendations  an estimate of the total cost of implementing the recommendations (including cost of labour). Marking scheme: Next page
