All of theories describe in the reading are all influential theories but everyone is different and posse different traits on how they perceive their own leadership theories. Three of the most influential for me are: Skills Approach, Adaptive leadership, and Team leadership.

Skills Approach

However, in the skills approach we shift our thinking from a focus on personality characteristics, which usually are viewed as innate and largely fixed, to an emphasis on skills and abilities that can be learned and developed. Although personality certainly plays an integral role in leadership, the skills approach suggests that knowledge and abilities are needed for effective leadership.

In the military as a senior leader one has to posse a special skillset that will aid them with quick thinking and being able to adapt to all different personality characteristics, posse administrative skills and having that knowledge and charisma to lead Soldiers. According Katz (1955, p. 34) suggested that effective administration (i.e., leadership) depends on three basic personal skills: technical, human, and conceptual.

Adaptive Leadership

Adaptive leadership is about how leaders encourage people to adapt—to face and deal with problems, challenges, and changes. Adaptive leadership focuses on the adaptations needed of people in response to changing environments. Simply said, adaptive leaders prepare and encourage people to deal with change.

In society and in the military leaders need to adapt to any situation that comes at them. One may not agree to what their supervisors are asking them to do but one needs to be flexible and be able to adapt with the many challenges and changes that may come. In the military things are constantly changing and all the Soldiers have learned to adapt to change whether they agree with it or not. Some adaptive leader challenges others to face difficult challenges, providing them with the space or opportunity they need to learn new ways of dealing with the inevitable changes in assumptions, feelings, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that they are likely to meet in addressing real problems. Adaptive leaders engage in activities that mobilize, motivate, organize, orient, and focus the attention of others (Heifetz, 1994). In addition, this approach to leadership is about helping others to explore and change their values. The goal of adaptive leadership is to encourage people to change and learn new ways of living so that they may do well and grow.

Team Leadership

Work teams are very prevalent in today’s organizations. The reliance on teams is due partially to increasingly complex tasks, more globalization, and the flattening of organizational structures. A team is a type of organizational group that is composed of members who are interdependent, who share common goals, and who must coordinate their activities to carry out these goals. Team members must work collectively to achieve their goals. Examples of organizational teams include senior executive teams, project management teams, task forces, work units, standing committees, quality teams, and improvement teams. Teams can be in the same place meeting face-to-face, or they can be geographically dispersed “virtual” teams meeting via various forms of communication technology. The exact definition of which organizational group is a team or not is constantly evolving as organizations confront the many new forms of contemporary collaboration (Wageman, Gardner, & Mortensen, 2012).

In the military most of the time we work in teams based on the job and skillsets that make the organization better. For the most past every team member has a vital role in the team because for the military it has an enormous impact on Soldiers lives. Team members in the military all have assigned task they need to carry out to become successful in their organization.

These three theories I have chosen are very important in my job setting in being in the military for 20 years of service. There are many other theories, but these are the most of interaction I have with others daily. Again, everyone will have different influential theories based on their daily encounters in one’s job and society in general.
