The study conducted by Powers (2014), examines the effects of drinking alcohol on the
academic performance of the students. Drinking of alcohol among the college students leads to
poor grades, adverse health problems, criminal, and social issues. Alcohol abuse is also on the
rise, and it has greatly affected the academic performance of the students.
The study found that an approximate of two-thirds of students in the colleges take alcohol
with half of them involved in binge drinking. Binge drinking means that students consume more
than five or more drinks in one episode. Additionally, it outlines that 1800 college students pass
away annually due to health problems emanating from consumption of alcohol (Powers, 2014).
Students with high GPA take few drinks per week as compared to students with low GPA
that are found to take many drinks per week. Additionally, it is found that there is a significant
relationship between blood alcohol level and GPA. Students with high blood alcohol level (BAL)
were found to have a low GPA.
