ASSIGNMENT: COMPARISON ESSAY
First draft due – November 13, 2017
Write a 4--page comparison essay (first draft) that examines the similarities (compares) and/or
differences (contrasts) between two things in order to make a point.
The similarities and differences should lead to a convincing conclusion. This is an important
feature in a comparison and contrast essay. Remember, it is not simply a list of similarities and
differences; it establishes an opinion about two items and compares and contrasts them to
support that opinion.
Topic: You must complete the topic proposal worksheet about the two subjects you plan to compare.
Use at least 2-3 outside sources to practice correct formatting of in-text citations and works cited
page.
Structure/Organization: Choose one: Point-by-point method or Block method.

REMINDERS: Your essay will include these elements of a comparison essay:
•
Introduction: Remember to have a hook, and be sure to provide enough background information
in your introduction so that your reader will be ready to understand both of your subjects.
•
Thesis statement: This will be the last sentence in your introduction that gives the reader an
overview about what you will discuss in your paper. Be sure that your thesis statement includes
language that indicates comparing or contrasting. Examples: The differences between urban
living and rural living with regard to the degree of friendliness between residents, the pace of life,
and the variety of available activities, make urban living a more convenient choice. // Japanese
cars are better than their American counterparts because of their durability, variety, and comfort.
•
Body paragraphs: Each body paragraph will have a topic sentence that relates to the thesis. As
you can see from the essay organization above, you have choices for organizing your paragraphs.
Your paper can have as many paragraphs as needed. Whichever style you use, be sure to include
transition words in your paragraphs to guide your reader from one idea to the next (In addition; For
example, etc.) and to show a similar or contrasting relationship between ideas. Examples:
Comparison Transitions
One similarity, Another similarity,
Like, Both, also, in the same way,
likewise, similarly
➢
Contrast Transitions
although, and yet, at the same time,
despite that, even so, even though, for
all that, however, in contrast, in spite of,
instead, nevertheless, on the contrary,
on the other hand, otherwise,
regardless, still, though, yet
NOTE: Do not use the transition signals and, but and however more than 2 times each. Vary
your vocabulary throughout your paper using the new signal words you’ve learned.
•
Give specific examples: Finding concrete specific examples does not require a huge vocabulary
or a vivid imagination, but it does require the willingness to recall what you already know. If you
really can't find any examples or specifics to support your thesis or general conclusion, you should
probably change your topic. Try to gather as many specific details in the prewriting steps of
brainstorming and outlining. If you have many concrete specifics at hand before you begin your
draft, you're more likely to think and write more easily and accurately about your topic.
•
Concluding statement: This is the first sentence in your concluding paragraph. Here, you will
provide your analysis and form your conclusion/opinion based on the information you presented
about your two subjects.
o
•
What convincing conclusion can you draw from the supporting examples regarding your
two subjects? How does one weigh against the other? Example: In conclusion, it is evident
that the differences between smartphones and flip-phones clearly make the smartphone
the smarter choice. (Then, continue with the rest of the concluding paragraph.)
Concluding paragraph: Your concluding paragraph is part of your analysis of your subjects and
should not introduce any new information. Support your concluding statement by summarizing the
main points in your paper.
Things to keep in mind:
•
Point of View: For an academic comparison essay, your discussion should be in the 3rd person.
•
Compare/Contrast relationship words: Use words indicating a similar or contrasting relationship
between ideas. (See also above chart, the textbook, and pp. 116-117/ 119-120 in Writing
Academic English.)
•
Transition signals: Each body paragraph should begin with a transitional expression. They link your
paragraphs together, thus giving your paper coherence. Although you can use transitional
expressions wherever needed in your essay, they are imperative (A MUST) in your topic sentences
at the beginning of each paragraph. This connects one paragraph to the other. Example: One
important difference is… Another difference is… (See additional example transitions in “Not as
Different as You Think.”)
•
MLA Format: Heading; header; title centered; double-spaced; 12 pt. font; first line of each
paragraph indented (using the TAB key on your keyboard).
•
Grammar: Use the feedback from your previous essay to get an idea about where your strengths
and weaknesses lie in basic grammar, such as sentence fragments, word forms, verb tense,
subject-verb agreement, etc. Be sure to check for these carefully as you write your draft.
