Heroes in Fantasy Stories
Fantasy stories capitalize on building the profile of a hero who is usually the main
character. The setting of many fantasy stories involves a protagonist who is the hero who saves
the day and an antagonist; the villain. The stories use the hero to teach particular values to the
audience while acting as entertainment at the same time. That way, the hero is the person who is
given the responsibility, either by the community, their dependents or by nature, to defeat the
villain who is the representation of evil in the stories. The hero is the representation of good in
any story and works to defeat evil through their strength, bravery, intelligence, and strategy.
The characteristics of heroes in most fantasy stories are similar. First and foremost, the
creators embark on creating a person who is physically attractive. The physical attraction could
be the tall, handsome male character with a flattering smile and muscular body. Other than the
natural physical attraction, a hero shows extraordinary skills that draw the audience towards
loving them. For instance, in the film Merlin, the main character Merlin is not the average tall
and muscular youth, but he has magical abilities which draw the audience towards him. This
presentation of heroes as strong muscular young men or beautiful young ladies is consistent in
the industry.
Other than the physical appearance of the heroes, there is the issue of the heroes’
abilities, beliefs, and convictions. A hero must be a person who holds a particular belief-system.
For instance, the hero could be a person who believes in justice and sets out to restore it in the
