Communication Technology Technology has evolved over time with many sectors in the economy embracing information technology as the new way of life; this has led to effectiveness in these sectors and most importantly their success. Some of these sectors include the healthcare industry, marketing, and advertising, real estate, construction, and finance, to mention but a few. The healthcare industry has undergone a technological transformation and embraced electronic storage of medical records and the use of digital devices in curing various diseases. The finance and marketing sectors have adopted the use of cloud in the storage of their mail and sales and marketing tools. All these industries have realized a better quality of services and improvement in sales and communication with their customers. Communication is dated back to the early 13th century where people used ancient modes of communication (Barney, 2014). These included the use of telegrams, fire, letters, fax and oral communication. Telegrams involved the transmission of symbols, like smoke signals and drum beats, known to both parties. Fires were mostly used to alert the other party of impending danger or to announce the arrival of a person or group of people. Through the progression of education where people learnt how to read and write, letters were used to send messages to each other (Barney, 2014). The fax was used to send images, though they were not clear. This led to the improvement of the facsimile machine. Oral communication was used between individuals in their day to day life. However, over time, many inventors have come up with new, better and sustainable means of communication. These new developments include the use of mobile phones, the internet, and emails. The evolution of technology has not been a walk in the park. Various institutions have burnt the midnight oil trying to bring about communication technology. For instance, the mobile communication technology has had various improvements since its first model was made. The mobile phone today has enhanced rapid communication between individuals thereby making business transactions easier and more manageable. The internet and use of emails have also made communication cost-effective and accelerated the workflow process in business set-ups. As seen from the evolution of various digital devices, it is safe to say that different times have had different needs and this has prompted the invention communication technology. There are different forms of communication as per the need of the people involved. The radio, television, and internet have been described as the phases through which communication technology has been revolutionized (Wahlgren, 2010). Radio and television involve the transfer of signals within a broadcast range to other devices that will pick the signal. There are various factors that are attributed to the evolution of communication technology. Some of these include easy access to information sources, convenience, accessibility, and privacy of personal information (Wahlgren, 2010). The significance of communication technology cannot be undermined. Communication technology creates strong ties between people of different origin. This creates beneficial solid networks between people and organizations. In this new age, communication technology is key in carrying out basic and essential activities like business transactions with clients, education through research from the internet, and normal communication between people in a setting. It has also built the prospect of the invention of new technological developments in the future as the needs of people keep changing. Needless to say, communication technology is the bridge between the past, the present and the future in technology. Communication technology has seen massive improvements in the education sector. Learning has been based on communication technology in the recent past and this is likely to increase with time. Schools have embraced the use of various digital devices like tablets and interactive digital whiteboards to make learning more interesting and learner-centered. This has enhanced teacher-learner interaction in class. The training acquired by teachers in these digital fields enhances creative thinking in the undertaking of various activities in subjects like science. In higher learning institutions, students use these devices to acquire knowledge as well as do research on different topics. Students have therefore become very acquainted with communication technology and this has helped many societies in embracing digital literacy (Wahlgren, 2010). The advancement seen in communication technology has created anticipation for newer and better models in the future. This has led to the creation of various goals in communication technology. Some of these are to improve the quality of communication all over the world. This will build stronger relationships and interactions between different countries, creating better networks for developing countries as well as developed ones. Other objectives are to encourage more inventions by equipping students with the skills needed in communication technology in preparation for future developments, to make the world a global market where people can interact freely and share ideas, and to create a culture where communication technology is part of the day to day activities making communication failures non-existent. The developments in technology have been felt far and wide with many people embracing technologically advanced means of communication. Several countries have invested resources in the development of communication technology due to the increasing need for digital literacy in the business sector. The world has become a global market with people from different parts of the world getting an equal chance to communicate with each other effectively and share ideas on new and upcoming innovations. However, the development in communication technology has some demerits. There has been an increase in cyber-crime through activities like consumer fraud. Other crimes that can occur through the internet include terrorism, piracy of software, stalking and economic epicene. Though the advancement in technology has been mostly successful, it has been faced with a couple of challenges. Some people have remained adamant to ancient modes of communication and refused to embrace the change in technology. Another challenge facing the development of communication technology is the allocation of finances to the sector. Some countries do not find it necessary to finance development programs as they may not be well equipped to nurture efficient exploitation of the sector to realize development (Grant & Meadows, 2016). Comparing the merits and demerits of communication technology, countries that have embraced the use of technological devices in various sectors are better placed than those who do not. While it is no secret that the investment in technology is expensive, it is worth it because the benefits that are realized are far better and enhance development in different sectors of a country.
