Description

The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion. At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Friday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Friday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation. The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit. Out of all of the Constitutional Amendments, the First Amendment truly embodies the foundation of the American way of life and is valued highly by American society. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes expressed the belief of many that free speech is essential for competition and the search for the truth. Freedom of speech is important to the United States because it allows for the evaluation and challenge of governmental abuses of power. Research the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and explain its major provisions and which ones are of significance to prisoners. Assignment Guidelines: •Using your course materials, textbook, and Web resources, research the provisions of the First Amendment. ◦Select 3 of the major provisions, and explain why they are important to prisoners. ◦How has each provision been altered to accommodate both prisoners and prison officials? ◦Which provision do you feel is the most important? •Post a topic to the Discussion Board that contains your responses pertaining to the information above. •Comment on 2 other students' topics, and offer additional information that supports their arguments, or explain to them why you disagree with their selection of the most important provision of the First Amendment. In your own words, please post a response to the Discussion Board and comment on 2 other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your postings. For assistance with your assignment, please use your text, Web resources, and all course materials.

The Right to Freedom of Religion
The First Amendment covers the right to freedom of religion. Beliefs that are religious
are protected by the first amendment, and this is mostly related to the mainstream religions as
well as the less well known and non-traditional faiths as well. In deciding what will qualify as
religion, the Supreme Court will often address whether the belief addresses fundamental and
legitimate questions (Palmer, 2014).It will also be essential to convince the prison administrators
that one's beliefs are "sincerely held." Currently, the right of free exercise does not exclude
anyone from complying with neutral aspects of religious beliefs or general applicability of such
laws.
