Some criminal cases are often associated with mental illness. The behavior of such
victims might lead to other people avoiding them or discriminating against them. Stigmatization
is often the main issue that leads to these crimes. Different people have different beliefs and
stereotypes about mentally ill victims. Some issues with stigmatization of mental illness in the
society affect the violent crime rate in the country and the world (Reavley, Jorm & Morgan,
2016). In essence, it is necessary to ensure that we mitigate if not stop stigmatization of mental
illness.
What are the main issues with the current stigmatization of mental illness in our society?
How might these concerns affect our violent crime rate?
The main issues with the current stigmatization of mental illness in the society affect
mostly the victims and the people around them. Many people may develop mental illness but
may be scared to get treated. In most cases, they do not ask for help because they feel ashamed
and do not want to be discriminated against the other population (Reavley, Jorm & Morgan,
2016). Some would not want to experience the negative treatment or judgment from others, and
that can be part of what can make them shy away from treatment. It is one of the issues with the
current stigmatization of mental illness in the society because it makes it hard for someone to
open up and share his or her problem. The reason is that they fear that instead of being helped
and treated, they will be mistreated and discriminated against in any given context (Reavley,
Jorm & Morgan, 2016).
